THE PROPAGANDA MOVEMENT

•  a cultural organization formed in 1872 by Filipino expatriates in


Europe. Composed of the Filipino elite called "ilustrados", exiled liberals
and students attending Europe's universities gravitated to the
movement.
• A peaceful crusade or campaign for reforms.
•  Filipinos used the Propaganda Movement as a medium in their pursuit
for independence from Spain. The whole movement began as gentle
actions and advices created by students from the Philippines, who
attended universities in Europe.
GOALS OF THE PROPAGANDA MOVEMENT:
• Equality of the Filipinos and Spaniards
• Assimilation of the Philippines as a
regular province of Spain
• Human rights for Filipinos
• Representation in the Philippines in the
Cortes Generales, the Spanish
parliament.

LA SOLIDARIDAD
• The newspaper was founded by
Graciano Lopez Jaena
inBarcelona in February15, 1889
• The president of La Solidaridad was
Rizal's cousin, Galicano Apacible.
• La Solidaridad was created due to
reality that mass media is important in
Propagating the Propaganda objectives
• An important factor limiting the
influence of the propagandists was the
fact that they wrote in Spanish, a
language virtually unknown to the
masses

• How La Solidaridad was founded
• In Spain, del Pilar was popular among the Filipino community
for his patriotic campaigns and propaganda.
• When Jose Rizal was studying in London, he received a letter
from Mariano Ponce, containing some articles written by
‘Plaridel.’ Because of this, Rizal had gained respect and
interest to Plaridel which he later founded his true name del
Pilar. Subsequently, the two became friends through
exchanging letters
• Rizal first met Marcelo Del Pilar and other reformists when he
visited Filipino communities in Madrid and Barcelona on
December 1888. Later, Rizal decided to actively help in the
fight for reforms due to similar ideals and political vision.
• Thus, the La Solidaridad was established on December 13,
1888

• Recognized the effort of 20 women from
Malolos who wrote a petition to Governor
General Weyler to put them in school.
• Rizal wants women to be offered the same
opportunities in terms of education

Filipinos:

REASONS FOR FAILURE

• Lack of funds to support the movement


• The Spanish government did not agree to any of its demands.
• Confiscation of newspaper issues in the mails
• Internal conflicts was present between Jose Rizal and Del Pilar which
led to Del Pilar backing out.
• After years of publication from 1889 to 1895, La
solidaridad had begun to run out of funds. In Del
Pilar’s editorial he said:
• “ we are persuaded that no sacrifices are too little
to win the rights and the liberty of a nation that is
oppressed by slavery.”
