Activity No. 1
And the Shape Is
I. Introduction
I like my shadow; it reminds me that I exist. There is no light without shadow, just
as there is no happiness without pain. Where there is light, there must be shadow, and
where there is shadow there must be light. There is no shadow without light and no light
without shadow.
By completing this activity, we will find out the shape of the shadow.
II. Materials
1. Actual Flashlight or use the flashlight app of the mobile phone (if both
materials are not readily available, you may use a lighted candle Caution: Be
sure to put off the candle immediately after use)
2. Two spherical objects; 1-big, 1-small (alternative: make your own balls using
crumpled used papers ;1-big, 1-small)
3. ruler
III. Procedure
1. Align the flashlight and the balls horizontally.
2. Point the flashlight to one of the balls.
3. Observe the shadow it casts on the ball behind it.

IV. Results and Discussion
Guide Questions
Its shape looks like a heart but not totally formed, it’s like an upside down triangle
but a little bit rounded.
2. In what way that this simple activity supports Aristotle’s claim about the shape of
the Earth?
The shadow form like a heart shape that supports Aristotle’s claim about the shape
of Earth but not totally the same.
3. Supposed that the Earth is heart shape, what shadow would it formed when
sunlight is aligned with it? Why?
The shadow would form like a rounded upside-down triangle and the light is
aligned with the front part of a heart-shaped Earth, then its shadow is also heart
shape.

V. Conclusion
The 2 balls were placed horizontally in a darkened room during night time and
pointed the flash light to the first ball that was placed in front (small). I observed
the shadow formed and it turned out to be a rounded upside-down triangle that
somehow supporters the claim of Aristotle about the shape of the Earth because
according to Aristotle, the shape of the Earth refers to a heart.
