Badminton
History
The modern game of badminton was developed in England in the 1860s. The modern
game was developed from a game called poona and is most popular in the world in Southeast
Asia. Badminton is now considered a lifetime activity. It has been known by many names
including; poona, battledore, and shuttlecock.
Terminology
Fault: A violation of the rules.
Clear: A shot hit high and deep into the opponent’s court.
Smash: An offensive shot hit downward with great force.
Drop: A shot that barely clears the net and drops immediately over the net.
Serve: Always hit diagonally and begins the start of each point.
Drive: Sends the birdie low over the net in a straight path, deep into the opponent’s court.
Rally: Players hitting the shuttle back and forth to each other.
Center Line: Line perpendicular to the net that separates the left and right side of the court.
Baseline: Back boundary line at each end of the court that runs parallel to the net.
Let: permits the serve or the point to be replayed under certain circumstances.
Ace: A serve that the opponent is unable to return.
Rules
 Men’s match goes to 15 points while a women’s match only goes to 11 points.
 Serve must be diagonally across the net and must land inside the service box.
 In a single match the court is long and narrow, while the doubles court is short and wide.
 All serves must be contacted below the waist.
 Points are only awarded to the person who is serving. If you win the point but you did
not serve then you are just awarded the serve.
 Only the birdie may touch the net.
 A player may not reach over the net to hit the birdie.
 After each point in serving, a player alternates to serve in the opposite serving box.
 A birdie that lands on the line is considered good.
 To determine who serves first the players will take part in a spinning of the racket.
