What is ART?
Art is creation. Creating something original and something different. Art is life. It is creating life on a
material and making inanimate objects to have life. To create art is to give life.
Contemporary Art

It is not restricted to individual experience but it is reflective of the world we live in. Events
in the world having an effect on the Philippines.

The scope of contemporary art is broad. There are over 100 art styles and movements under it. A
contemporary artist experiments with medium and form to make a statement. They employ
collaborative and interactive practices as well, which to a certain degree, are gaining popularity.
Contemporary Art is a new style of art that emerged after World War II and during the Martial Law
Era. Contemporary artists did not feel obliged to apply perspective, color combination, naturalism, and

other guidelines that were carefully observed in traditional art. They deliberately broke the rules of
traditional art. The Philippine is GOLD MINE of art.
● Pre-Colonial Arts or Ethnic Art (Integral to life)
In Pre-colonial Philippines, arts are for ritual purposes or for everyday use.
● Islamic Arts (Geometric Designs)
Islamic art is characterized by geometric designs and patterns eliciting focus from the
believers.
Four colonial periods in our history- the Spanish, British, American and Japanese.
● Spanish Era (Faith and Catechism)
Art became a handmaiden of religion, serving to propagate the Catholic faith and thus
support the colonial order at the same time.
● American Era (Secular Forms of Art)
In the American regime, commercial and advertising arts were integrated into the fine arts
curriculum. Moreover, Americans favored idyllic sceneries and secular forms of arts.
● Japanese Era (Orientalizing)
Showcase indigenous art and traditions of the Philippines.
● Modern Era (National Identity)
Modern era in Philippine Art began after World War 2 and the granting of Independence.
Writers and artists posed the question of national identity as the main theme of various
art forms.
● Contemporary Arts
Philippine Contemporary Art was an offshoot of social realism brought about by Martial
Law. Arts became an expression of people’s aspiration for a just, free, and sovereign
society.

Look for their artworks on the Internet. Observe how their paintings are different from the artworks of
the traditional Filipino artists like Fernando Amorsolo, Juan Luna, etc. Today, hundreds of
contemporary artists are found in the 18 regions of the Philippines. Their arts can be grouped according
to visual and performance art, and crafts.
Characteristics of Contemporary Art The following are the characteristics of contemporary art:
● Contemporary art is not confined to the museum but is also found in galleries, art schools, side
streets, and public spaces like the train or bus stations, shopping centers, or parks.
● Selling of contemporary artworks becomes more accessible since artists post their works online,
but some only intend to display their works in a particular setting and for a given span of time.
● Many contemporary artists are self-taught and did not have formal education. They are more
flexible in using different kinds of materials.
● Some contemporary artists employ the help of fabricators, carpenters, electricians, or welders
in "constructing" their artworks.
● Originality is not an issue in contemporary art. An artist can get another artist's work and add to
it, redesign or interpret it using other materials.
● What is essential to contemporary artists is the process of art-making. It is the experience, for
example, of dipping one's hands into a pail of paint and making markings on a flat surface that
matters to the contemporary artist.

● Given these characteristics, it can be said that contemporary art is a statement that an artist
makes about condition, thoughts, ideas, beliefs, and many other things that define human life
through the use of various mediums and materials.
