Cell Division Lesson Plan

This lesson is a culminating activity that combines all the concepts about the cell cycle and cell division. Students will rate their understanding of the learning goals before creating a labeled diagram and description of each step of the cell cycle. They will have support materials like a word bank and video. The teacher will check in on students' progress and address any misconceptions before doing a final peer review. Finally, students will retake the understanding survey and this lesson prepares them for the summative assessment.

Lesson introduction -10 min

This lesson follows a series of lessons on the cell cycle, so it is being used as a
culminating activity that combines all of what we have learned about the cell cycle and
cell division into one body of work.

I am going to start off the lesson with a quick google form that asks them to rate their
understanding of the specific learning goals on a scale of 0-4.
0 = no understanding,
1 = I recognize parts of it but don’t understand the key concepts or can’t explain what I
recognize
2 = I know most of the steps but get the order mixed up
3 = I know the steps and the order but don’t understand why they take place
4 = I know the steps and understand why they happen

I will then explain the activity to the class before having them begin developing their
models (if we were in person, I would have them work together, but google meets
doesn’t do well with group work).

Body-40 min
The students will be drawing and labeling a model of each of the different steps within
cell division (interphase, prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase, cytokinesis) that
shows what takes place during that step. Here is the template

They will then give a written description of what their image is showing.

To differentiate instruction, I will have a word bank that shows the names of the different
structures and steps. If students already know the structures and steps, the word bank
can be used as a reinforcement of their knowledge, if they are still unsure of the
structures and/or steps, the word bank will act allow them to make connections to
previous work that we have done.

I will have a breakout room open (this will be during distance learning) for students to
join for additional help.

There is a video provided that they can reference if they need additional support

If a student needs additional support on the specifics of the steps, I will recommend that
they take a look at their notes and another previous assignment, and then I will check
their work and make suggestions based on what they have done.
They will have the option of completing it digitally or drawing it on paper
If they complete it digitally, I will be able to monitor their progress as they go.

Closure-15 min
After looking through the students’ work, I will discuss key misconceptions or mistakes
that I made note of. I will then give the students an opportunity to correct any mistakes
before submitting a final draft
(if we were in person, I would have students swop papers for peer review before
reviewing them)

Finally, I will have the students take the survey from the beginning again to check for
progress towards goals.

This is the final lesson before the class takes the summative assessment on the cell
cycle/cell division
