A. BACKGROUND
The Nairobi City Regeneration Program is part of the Intergovernmental relations between the
National and County Government aiming at revitalizing the national capital by focusing on priority
initiatives across (7) main thematic areas. Some of the themes include Solid Waste Management,
Security and Governance, Universal Healthcare, Reclamation of Riparian Reserves, Public Transport
and Water and Sanitation. Under the Water and Sanitation thematic area, the Key results areas are:
B. OBJECTIVES
Through support from Ministry of Water & Sanitation and Irrigation and using GoK funds, AWWDA
has embarked on construction of the Nairobi City Regeneration Program.
1. Over 35 Kilometer of sewers have been constructed to serve over 200,000 people in Nairobi
2. Over 7no. number major road and river crossing have been rehabilitated. The crossings used
to pollute the river.
3. The trunk and laterals sewer lines networks length have been increased by approx. 60% to
date covering areas greater parts of Eastland areas of the city that did not have a sewer
network and drained into the road’s stormwater drainage.
4. In the slum upgrading, provision of the ablution blocks and garbage collection points has
greatly reduced the contamination of the Nairobi Rivers at these areas with ablution blocks
connected into the sewer network of the city and central location of garbage disposal for ease
of sorting and collection for disposal by the relevant garbage collections agencies.
5. In slum upgrading also, there is reduced flow of surface run-off sewer through the slums into
the rivers as a result of rehabilitation of numerous dilapidated existing sewer lines within
these areas.
6. Cleaner and less contaminated Nairobi Rivers as a result of the reduced sewer flow into the
river and garbage disposal.
7. Employment creating for several persons either directly in the construction or indirectly as/by
manufacturers and supplier of the various construction materials.
8. Reduced incidences of water-borne diseases due to reduced pollution levels, mortality rate
and ultimately improved productivity of the population and livelihood.
The specific objectives of the phase 2 program are extension and rehabilitation of existing sewers
