Ray Diagrams for Spherical Mirrors

This document provides instructions for an activity to construct ray diagrams and determine the type, orientation, position, and size of images formed by spherical mirrors. Students are asked to draw six ray diagrams showing different object positions for concave and convex mirrors. They then fill out a table summarizing the image characteristics for each case. Guide questions ask how the object position affects the image, what type of mirror dentists use, and what kind of mirror is common in stores.

Activity 6.2
T-O-P-S after Reflection
Objective:

Construct Ray diagrams to determine the type, orientation position and size of the
images formed by spherical mirrors.
Materials: protractor, ruler and sheets of paper

Procedure:

1. Using the protractor and the ruler, copy each of the diagrams (I-VI) below
on a separate sheet of paper. As much as possible, use the four principal rays to locate
the image formed in a curved mirror.

CONCAVE MIRROR

I. II.

III. IV.

V. VI. CONVEX MIRROR

2. Fill up the table to summarize the characteristics of the image formed.

Location of Object IMAGE

TYPE ORIENTATION POSITION SIZE
CONCAVE
I. Farther than the
Center of
Curvature
II. At the Center of
Curvature
III. Between the
Center of
Curvature and the
Focal point
IV. At the focal
point
V. Between the
Focal point and
the Center of the
mirror(vertex/pole)
CONVEX
VI. Farther than C
in front of the
mirror
Guide Questions:
1. How does the location of the object affect the
characteristics and location of the image formed in a concave
mirror? Convex mirror?
2. What type of mirror do dentists usually use to clearly see the
images of our teeth? Why?
3. What kind of curved mirror do you see in most of the department
stores? Why do they use such kind of mirror?
