    JOSE MERCADO RIZAL
    • Jose Protacio Rizal Mercado y Alonzo Realonda
    Known as Dr. Jose P. Rizal • He was born on July 19,
    1861, on the night of a Wednesday at the town of
    Calamba Laguna.
    • Baptized in the Catholic church of his town on June
    22, 1861, by Fr. Rufino Collantoes a Batangueño; his
    God father was Fr. Pedro Casanas, a native of
    Calamba.
    • " Take good care of this child, for someday he will
    become a great man." -Fr. Pedro Collantes.
    FRANCISCO MERCADO RIZAL
    (1818-1898)
    •Jose's Father
    •"A model of father’s”
    •Studied Latin in Philosophy at the College of
    San Jose •Youngest of 13 offspring of Juan
    and Cinla Mercado. Born in Biñan, Laguna on
    April 18, 1818.
    TOEDORA ALONZO (1827-1913)
    •Jose's Mother
    •" A loving and prudent mother"
    •Studied at the College of Santa Rosa
    • She was a business-minded woman,
    courteous, religious, hardworking and well-
    read.
    • She was born in Santa Cruz, Manila on
    November 14, 1827, and died in 1913 in
    Manila.

    SATURINA RIZAL (1850-1913)


    • Eldest child of the Rizal-Alonzo
    marriage.
    • Her nickname was Neneng.
    • She had five children by her
    husband Manuel T. Hidalgo of
    Tanawan, Batangas.

    PACIANO RIZAL (1851-1930)


    • Only brother and confidant of José Rizal
    and the second child.
    • He became as a second father to Jose
    Rizal.
    • Studied at San José College in Manila.
    After his younger brother´ excecution,
    he joined the Philippine revolution and
    became a combat General.

    NARCISA MERCADO (1852-1939)


    • The third child. married
    Antonio Lopez at Morong,
    Rizal; a teacher and musician.

    OLYMPIA MERCADO (1855-1887)


    • The fourth child. Ypia was her pet's
    name. Married Silvestre Ubaldo, a
    telegraph operator from Manila;
    she died in 1887 from childbirth.

    LUCIA MERCADO (1857-1919)


    • The fifth child.
    • Married Mariano Herbosa of Calamba.
    • He was the nephew of Father Casanas.
    • Herbosa died of cholera in 1889 and was
    denied a Christian burial because Dr.
    Rizal was his brother-in-law.

    MARIA MERCADO (1859-1945)


    • The sixth child. Her nickname
    was Biang. Married Daniel
    Faustino Cruz of Biñan,
    Laguna.

    JOSE RIZAL (1861-1896)


    • The second son and the seventh child.
    • The greatest Filipino hero and a tremendous genius.
    • His nickbname was Pepe.
    • During his excile in Dapitan he lived together with
    Josephine Bracken, an Irisch girl from Hong-Kong.
    • They had a son with her, but their baby son died a few
    hours after birth.
    • Rizal named him Francisco after his father and buried
    him in Dapitan.
    • José was executed by the Spaniards on December
    30,1896.

    CONCEPCION MERCADO (1862-1865)


    • The eighth among the Rizal children,
    died at the age of three due to an
    illness. Her pet's name was Concha.

    • Josefa Rizal or Panggoy had epilepsy.
    • She was the ninth child of the family.
    • She died in 1945 at the age of 80.
    • Due to her illness, she never got married
    and died as spinster.

    TRINIDAD MERCADO (1868-1951)


    • The tenth child.
    • She was the longest living family
    member.
    • They gave her the pet's name
    Trining.
    • Like her sister Josefa, she never got
    married and also died an old maid
    at the age of 83.

    • She was the youngest child of
    the Rizal-Mercado clan.
    • Choleng was het pet name.
    • She later got married to

    • Born to an affluent family with Doña Teodora Alonso
    Realonda
    ///// and Don Francisco Mercado.
    • Jose Protacio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda was born
    on June 19, 1861 , in the town of Calamba , Laguna
    • He was baptized Jose Rizal Mercado at the Catholic of
    Calamba by the parish priest Rev. Rufino Collantes with
    Rev. Pedro Casañas as the sponsor.
    • He was the seventh child in a family of 11 children ( 2
    boys and 9 girls ). Both his parents were educated and
    belonged to distinguish families. • Jose begins school
    under the instruction of Justiano Aquin Cruz at just nine
    years of age.
    02-CHILDHOOD BACKGROUND
    • In 1871 , Jose continue his education under the
    instruction

    of Lucas Padua.
    • Rizal is examined by those in charge of college
    entrance to St. Tomas University in Manila ; he enters
    the school system as a scholar.
    • Rizal enters the Ateneo as a boarder at just 14 years of
    age.
    • At the age of 15 , Rizal receives a bachelor of Arts
    degree from the Ateneo de Manila. He not only
    receives this degree but receives it with the highest
    honor possible.

    Rizal had his early education in Calamba and Biñan. it was a typical
    schooling that a son of a llustrado family recelved during his time.

    Teaching was characterized by four R’s:
    1. Reading
    2. writing
    3. Arithmetic
    4. Religion
    ●
    Instruction was rigid and strict. Knowledge was forced into the
    minds of pupil. By means of tedious memory method aided by
    teachers whips.
    THE HERO'S FIRST TEACHER
    The first teacher was his mother
    Rizal at the age of 3 learned the
    alphabet and prayers.
    Doña Teodora discovered Jose's talent
    for poetry and encourages him to write.

    Rizal Described his Maestro as tall, thin, long necked,
    sharp-nosed, with a body slightly bent forward.
    The school was in maestro’s house.
    FIRST SCHOOL BRAWL

    Jose never run away from a fight
    Near the school was the house of an old painter,
    called Juancho, who was Father in- law of the
    schoolteacher.
    Old Juancho freely gave Jose drawing and
    painting lessons o Jose Rizal and his classmate
    Jose Guevara become apprentices.
    DAILY LIFE IN BINAN
    Jose's Daily Routine:
    1. Hears mass at 4 a.m. or studies lesson before going to mass.
    2. Goes to orchard to look for a mabolo to eat.
    3. Breakfast.
    4. Goes to class at 10a.m
    5. Lunch break.
    6. Goes back to school at 2p.m.
    7. Goes home at 5p.m Studies lesson and draws a lite.
    8. Has supper.
    9. Prays again.
    10. Plays in the street if moon is bright.
    11. Sleeps.
    BEST STUDENT IN SCHOOL
    Jose surpassed his classmates in Spanish, Lain and other subjects.
    His older classmates were jealous and squealed to the teacher
    whenever he had fights.
    Jose usually receives five to Six blows.

    END OF BIÑAN SCHOOLING


    Before the Christmas season in 1870, Jose receives letter from his
    sister saturnina.
    December 17, 1870, Jose left Biñan after one year and a half schooling
    in that town.
    Talim- the steamer that Jose rode.
    Arturo Camps - Frenchman and a friend of Don Frandisco took care of
    Jose during the trip.
