JOSE MERCADO RIZAL
• Jose Protacio Rizal Mercado y Alonzo Realonda
Known as Dr. Jose P. Rizal • He was born on July 19,
1861, on the night of a Wednesday at the town of
Calamba Laguna.
• Baptized in the Catholic church of his town on June
22, 1861, by Fr. Rufino Collantoes a Batangueño; his
God father was Fr. Pedro Casanas, a native of
Calamba.
• " Take good care of this child, for someday he will
become a great man." -Fr. Pedro Collantes.

(1818-1898)
•Jose's Father
•"A model of father’s”
•Studied Latin in Philosophy at the College of
San Jose •Youngest of 13 offspring of Juan
and Cinla Mercado. Born in Biñan, Laguna on
April 18, 1818.
TOEDORA ALONZO (1827-1913)
•Jose's Mother
•" A loving and prudent mother"
•Studied at the College of Santa Rosa
• She was a business-minded woman,
courteous, religious, hardworking and well-
read.
• She was born in Santa Cruz, Manila on
November 14, 1827, and died in 1913 in
Manila.

• Born to an affluent family with Doña Teodora Alonso
Realonda
///// and Don Francisco Mercado.
• Jose Protacio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda was born
on June 19, 1861 , in the town of Calamba , Laguna
• He was baptized Jose Rizal Mercado at the Catholic of
Calamba by the parish priest Rev. Rufino Collantes with
Rev. Pedro Casañas as the sponsor.
• He was the seventh child in a family of 11 children ( 2
boys and 9 girls ). Both his parents were educated and
belonged to distinguish families. • Jose begins school
under the instruction of Justiano Aquin Cruz at just nine
years of age.

• In 1871 , Jose continue his education under the
instruction

of Lucas Padua.
• Rizal is examined by those in charge of college
entrance to St. Tomas University in Manila ; he enters
the school system as a scholar.
• Rizal enters the Ateneo as a boarder at just 14 years of
age.
• At the age of 15 , Rizal receives a bachelor of Arts
degree from the Ateneo de Manila. He not only
receives this degree but receives it with the highest
honor possible.

Rizal had his early education in Calamba and Biñan. it was a typical
schooling that a son of a llustrado family recelved during his time.

Teaching was characterized by four R’s:
1. Reading
2. writing
3. Arithmetic
4. Religion

Instruction was rigid and strict. Knowledge was forced into the
minds of pupil. By means of tedious memory method aided by
teachers whips.
