Philosophy - from the Greek word: “philosophia” – love of wisdom.
- philosophy is the love of, or pursuit, (not the possession), of wisdom.
- it is not knowledge. It is about the search for knowledge.
Main Branches of Philosophy:
1. Metaphysics – deals with the fundamental questions of reality.
Examples of metaphysical concepts: Being, Existence, Purpose, Universals, Property, Relation,
Causality, Space, Time, Event, etc.
2. Epistemology – deals with our concept of knowledge, how we learn and what we can know.
Three main examples of Epistemology: truth, belief, and justification.
3. Logic – studies the rules of valid reasoning and argumentations.
Example: The process of coming to a conclusion of who stole a cookie based on who was in the
room at the time.
4. Ethics or Moral Philosophy – concerned with human values and how individuals should act.
Examples of common personal ethics: honesty, loyalty, integrity, respect, selflessness,
responsibility.
5. Aesthetics or esthetics – deals with the notion of beauty and the philosophy of art.
Concerns with beauty and tastes.
Ethics - moral principles that govern a person's behavior or the conducting of an activity.

Moral principles – principles of right and wrong that are accepted by an individual or a social group.
