Finding the Nth Term Using

2 Different Strategies
The Nth Term of a Sequence
A sequence is a set of numbers written in a special order by the application of a
definite rule. Each number in the sequence is called a term. Patterns and rules will help us
to continue a given sequence of numbers, figures, or to fill in the missing numbers or
symbols.
Example 1
Nth term Next three
Sequence Rule
rule terms
Every term after the first is obtained by
adding 3 to the number preceding it.

(0 + 3), (3 + 3), (6 + 3), (9 + 3), …

A. 3, 6, 9, 12, … 3n 15, 18, 21
or
Multiples of three.

(3 x 1), (3 x 2), (3 x 3), (3 x 4), …

Multiply the counting numbers by itself

B. 1, 4, 9, 16, … or squaring counting numbers. n2 25, 36, 49

(1 x 1), (2 x 2), (3 x 3), …

C. , 1, 1, …
3 4 The numerator in this sequence is
constant, the denominator is obtained 1 1 11
by adding1 after the other. ,,
𝑛+1 5 67

, , ,…

Every term after the first is obtained by -2(n – 1) +

D. 3, 1, -1, -3,
adding (-2) to the number preceding it. 3 or 5 – -5, -7, -9

2n
3, [3 + (-2)], [1 + (-2)], [-1 + (-2)],
Example 2
Look for a pattern then write the next three terms.

Sequence Next three terms

1. a, 2b, 3c, 4d 5e, 6f, 7g

2. a + b, a + 2b a + 3b, a + 4b, a + 5b
3. 7a, 5a, 3a a, -a, -3a
Example 3
Use counting numbers to easily find the rule.

B. 2, 4, 6, 8 2 x n or 2n
2 x (1) = 2
2 x (2) = 4
2 x (3) = 6
2 x (4) = 8
LEARNING TASK NO. 1 Directions: Solve each problem on a sheet of paper.

1. Complete the pattern: 7, 12, 22, ____, 57, 82, ____.

2. What are the missing numbers in the sequence 5, 10, 8, 13, ____, 16, ____?

3. Given the sequence 9, 6, 3, 0, …, at what nth term will the number become
-24?

4. What is the sum of the first 15 odd numbers?

5. Jacob saved ₱100 in March, ₱200 in April, ₱300 in May and so on until December. In
which month did he save ₱1,000? How much did Jacob save for 10 months?

LEARNING TASK NO. 2 Directions: Read and solve each problem. Then, write
the rule for finding the nth term on a sheet of paper.

1. In a small theatre, the first row has 10 seats, the second row has 12, and
the third row has 14. There are 24 rows in the theatre.
A. Which row has 40 seats?
B. How many seats are on the 7th row?
C. How many seats are there in the theatre?
Rule: __________

2. Mr. Dela Luna increased his son’s allowance who is studying in a university.
He gave him ₱ 3,000 on the first month. ₱ 3,300 on the second month, ₱
3,600 on the third month and so on.
A. How much will his son receive on the 7th month?
B. How much will he receive in 10 months? Rule: __________
