LUKSONG TINIK

“Jumping Over Thorns”

Children playing in the streets under the afternoon sun with laughter and wounds after
having some nap or maybe not. It’s nostalgic right? I really miss those days, without
having mobile phones and other gadgets, yet having so much joy playing various street
games until the sun sets.

This artwork would make us want to go back in those days, reminding us our childhood
and revive the child within us. A masterpiece painted by one of the remarkable artists in
our country, Vicente Manansala. This was one of his private collection in 1973. The
painting shows us a popular game in the Philippines, originated in Cabanatuan, Nueva
Ecija, the Luksong-tinik. An oil painting in cubism style and prominent piece of his works.
Inside the four sides of this magnificent painting, I could see the primary and secondary
colors which is the red, yellow, and blue in the clothes of the three girls, and it is
surrounded by different shades orange, violet, and a bit of green and brown. So, all in all,
it is a colorful painting. Also, the main subject are the three girls having a yellowish-brown
skin that represents the skin color of the Filipinos. Thus, the primary colors of the dresses
represent the colors we could see in the Philippine flag representing our nation. I could
see lines and various shapes that are somehow faded near the main subject and used
strokes of white to give emphasis or highlights on to the subject. I could tell the roughness
of the painting by just looking at it because of the how the artist painted it giving it a
rough texture but giving it softness by using light shades of the color used. It is symmetrical
in some ways because I could see the formation of the subjects in a triangular form that
also gives it a sense of proportion and balance. The white strokes also give movement to
the painting specially in the hands and the other parts of the subject to show the
movements made from jumping. By just the looks of it, I could feel happiness, peace and
freedom.

To be honest, I love every part of this artwork. This makes me feel proud that a Filipino
painted this painting. If I have this painting in our house, and every time I would see this
hanging on my wall, I would absolutely stop for a moment, look at it and smile. This one
is a successful work of art. It depicts Filipino culture and our nation itself. Also, this reminds
us the importance of loving our culture and being proud of it.
