REFLECTION ON ELEMENTS PART 2

“MAGPUPUKOT”
CARLOS V. FRANCISCO

The first time I looked at this painting I really thought they are fighting something because of the
facial expressions but as then I realized that there’s net and water so it must be an action on the
water. I searched the meaning of “magpupukot” and there I knew it’s about fishing. I was amazed
because the picture is actually drawing me in that situation. It feels like I feel their effort in pulling
the fish net out of the water.

Moving on in analyzing the painting I first start looking directly at the water. It shows curve that
signifies movement; the water is moving because of the force they applying to the fish net. It was
also painted in a horizontal view that expresses calmness, though the water is moving it doesn’t
show hard or rough waves. It also carries my eyes horizontally and follow the people pulling the
net. From the farther group of fishermen located at the top of the painting; right to left and the
nearer group of fishermen located at the bottom of the painting, left to right. I also researched
that Carlos came from angono and in their province fishing community exist and that’s how he
got the inspiration to paint “Mapupukot”.

Next let’s look at the subject itself: the fishermen. There are two groups in the painting. To make
it clearer let’s name the farther fishermen as group A and the nearer fishermen will be group B.
As I stare at the artwork – GROUP A has blurred lines that shows distance. Hence, we can say
that the subject is slightly far away from the point of view of the painter. While the GROUP B has
a much heavier line that shows nearness. Both of the groups have bold lines that expresses
strength and sturdiness. From what I have seen, they are applying such strong force in order to
pull the fish net under the water. And like the setting of water, they also have curves that signifies
movement.

In conclusion, for me, the painting is shouting for men’s effort in doing labor work. Here in the
Philippines almost all of the fishermen are men/boys because they are capable of having such
strength to pull a very heavy fishing net. It shows culture and simplicity of life. That although they
are having a hard time, their body is accustomed to such activity. It shows cooperation and
teamwork and for me that symbolizes us Filipinos. That we are capable of working as one, of
having union, in order to succeed in each and every day of our life. Padayon Philippines!
