Factors

I am the rose that is influenced by the four factors — heredity, environmental, social and
person-volition. First is heredity, my appearances came from the genes of my mother and
father, the same as how roses have an identical color when planted. Meanwhile, when the
weather is sunny a rose is glowing at sight and if a rose is placed on an area with the spot
where it gets sun all day, roses will bloom at their best. This situation is linked on how the
environmental factor affects me as a person. I am living in a place wherein the neighborhood
has the qualities of being a cheerful and approachable person. With that, I, myself carried
that characteristic as I interact with others. This leads to the third aspect — social factor. As
the rose has grown, it will be possibly cut and turned into a bouquet combined with other
flowers similar to my waning stage where I was associated with other people that eventually
became my friends who made me realize and discover new things. However, sometimes, I
am a folded flower who will only bloom once I get to know myself more. It is the reason why
there are times when I distanced myself from the others — a person-volition factor.

Philo

What makes a rose a rose? On the outside appearance, a rose is pleasing to the eye. But
inside, it symbolizes love, purity, and beauty. This condition is inlined on how a philosophical
view — The Concept of Metaphysics of Self by Immanuel Kant, influenced me. The outer
self pertains to my physical appearance while my inner self reflects my purpose, values, and
identity as a person.
Furthermore, as I am currently on the journey to find what is my purpose and ask myself
whether all of this was real, I would conclude that it is in reality because of the philosophical
perspective of Rene Descartes, “I think, therefore I am.”. I would not doubt myself for my
own existence for the moment that I doubt, it is true.

Science

As noticed in the illustration, roses have thorns. A thorn to protect the plant from the
predators. In reality, conforming to psychoneuroimmunology, it corresponds to the way I
observe and analyze a person’s trait when one is associated with me. On this account, I can
determine whether it has either a good or bad influence for me.

Moreover, the concept of Psychoanalysis by Sigmund Freud also gave me knowledge to


know more about myself. As a rose, I cannot see my roots. I do not know how wide it goes
beneath the ground. I am still unconscious about the “self” whom I have yet to discover as I
live and have a future ahead of me.

3 significant things that I learned:

Upon reading Module 1, I have learned that Self and Identity are flexible. Due to the different
factors— social, environmental, heredity, and person-volition, one has the ability to change
or improve their own identity. For instance, a timid person can become the opposite once he
interacted with an acquaintance of loud people. However, he can choose if he will remain the
person he is in compliance with the person-volition.

The second thing that I learned is the Nature of Self in the concepts from Philosophical
views.
Based on Philosophy, the self defines the characteristics of a person which makes one
different from the other. This characteristic leads one to its consciousness. A consciousness
which makes a person the doer of every action that is done. In addition, the self can also
have knowledge and wisdom to achieve true happiness.

Lastly, is the Self in Science. There are two views of self scientifically— self has physical
nature and self has a nurture to function in the context of society as well as the institution. In
the former, I learned that physical appearances of a person came from the genetics,
specifically the DNA that obtains our unique genetic code and a non-negotiable factor. On
the contrary, the self in social sciences signifies how a person composes oneself in his role
in the community.
