Tropical Cyclones: Impact & Formation

Oceans and seas influence weather on continental land masses. A large amount of solar energy reaching the sea surface goes towards evaporating water. This evaporated water gets carried into the atmosphere where it condenses to form clouds and precipitation. Sometimes intense cyclonic circulations form, which are known as tropical cyclones. Tropical cyclones develop over tropical waters and are low pressure systems that bring heavy rain and strong winds as they move inland. They cause the most damage when making landfall.

Numbered-lettered Outline

TOPIC OUTLINE

Thesis Statement:

Oceans and seas have great influence on the weather of continental masses. A large
portion of the solar energy reaching the sea-surface is expended in the process of
evaporation.

I. Information that is gathered to acknowledge to learn about the Natural

Disaster “Tropical Cyclone”
A. Influences the weather continental masses
1. Oceans
2. Seas
B. Cycles of forming a Tropical cyclone.
1. Solar energy reaching the sea-surface is expended in the process of
evaporation.
2. Water evaporated from the sea/ocean is carried up into the
atmosphere and condenses.
3. Forming clouds from which all forms of precipitation
4. Sometimes, intense cyclonic circulations
C. Definitions of a Tropical Cyclone.
1. Are warm-core low pressure systems associated with a spiral inflow
of mass at the bottom level and spiral outflow at the top level.
2. Defined as a non-frontal, synoptic-scale cyclone developing over
tropical and sub-tropical waters at any level and having a definitely
organized circulation.
D. Different identifications of a Topical Cyclone in different parts in the
continent.
1. "Cyclonic"
a. In the bay of Bengal
b. Arabian Sea
c. Western South Indian Ocean
2. "Hurricanes"
a. North Atlantic
b. Eastern North Pacific
c. South Pacific Ocean

3. "Willy-willy"
a. Eastern part of the Southern Indian Ocean
4. "Typhoons"
a. Western North Pacific Ocean
E. Areas in which Tropical Cyclones can never form.
a. South Atlantic Ocean
b. South Eastern Pacific
F. Phases of a Tropical Cyclone
a. They develop at latitudes usually greater than 5° from the
equator.
b. They reach their greatest intensity while located over warm tropical
water.
c. As soon as they move inland, they begin to weaken, but often not
before they have caused great destruction.

II. Strong Tropical Cyclones are mostly formed in the Pacific Region.
A. Geographically prone to Tropical Cyclones
1. Philippines
B. The casualties of a country that is prone to Tropical Cyclones
1. Generally produce heavy rains
2. Flooding of large areas
3. Strong winds

II. Where does a Tropical Cyclone frequently form?
A. over oceans where sea surface temperature
B. air temperatures are greater than 26°C
III. How does a Tropical Cyclone function?
A. air accumulates large amounts of sensible
B. latent heat as it spirals towards the center
