Teaching Philosophy
I believe the role of an educator in society is to make a difference in their student’s lives,
helping them achieve their dreams and develop a passion for the subject you teach. I want to
become a drama teacher in order to show those student’s who believe that drama is just an easy
A, the idea that performing can be profoundly cathartic. Performers, and technical theatre
individuals come from all different walks of life with vastly different interests. Drama is a place
where people that are so different from each other can come together and create magic on stage
through the hard work of everyone involved. The theatrical community throughout Alberta is
very inclusive and supportive of one other which is a brilliant message to be sending. The goal of
creating this concept in a classroom setting is what any drama teacher should hope to achieve.
I believe the educator has an important role within the classroom and that is to develop
passion and thought-provoking mindsets into their students. Regardless of subject area, educators
should be a guiding light in the classroom in which students can retain the material in creative
and ground-breaking ways. A teacher needs to be passionate about what they are teaching and
demonstrate to the students that what they are saying is something to be analyzed and
considered. Students learn best when they are given chances to engage with the material in
creative and innovative ways that is not simply a rehashing of the textbook or curriculum.
Students want to be inspired and try new things, as an educator I must give them a reason to care.
Educators can do this by letting the students participate in the lessons and demonstrate their
interpretations of what they are learning. There is nothing more boring to a student then a class
where the teacher is close minded and not using a growth mind set approach to teaching.
The goals as an educator I will put into place include; understanding students as people
and who they are, making the lessons engaging and thought provoking for all of the students, and
accepting the fact that I must be flexible and adaptable at a moments notice. Educators must
achieve the goals they put into place and ensure that these goals are reachable for any given year.
The goals may change overtime and that is perfectly okay, the whole point of setting goals is that
as an educator I am attempting to ensure the success of my students. Additionally, an effective
teacher is someone that is willing to admit when they are wrong or have treated a student
unfairly. Educators are human just like everyone else and just because your students are younger
than you, does not mean that you are always right. A teacher must be humble and willing to try
alternative methods when their first attempts fail. In retrospect an effective teacher is someone
who goes to school everyday wanting to make a difference in their student’s lives.
All students have the capacity to learn and as a future educator I must realize that
students all learn in different ways. There are visual learners, verbal learners, kinesthetic
learners, physical learners, and there are students who learn better independently while there are
students that learn better from group cooperation. As a student I was always a hands-on learner
who needed to act out what I was learning and work with my hands. Unfortunately, many
teachers would not allow this to occur and it resulted in years of struggling and feeling inferior to
the other students. I want to prevent another student from going through this same scenario by
ensuring that my classroom accommodates leaners from all different areas of learning. Teachers
owe their students understanding and a willingness to teach even if they must alter it for different

students to understand it. If educators expect students to come to class on time, prepared, and
ready to learn, then educators must be willing to accommodate, passionately teach, and be ready
to engage students in guided learning. Teaching requires effort from both parties and educators
should respect and understand this concept.
I want to create a classroom environment where every student feels welcome and ready to
engage in creative and interactive lessons. Inspiring students is what any educator should be
striving for, teaching takes a special kind of person and that is why the expression, “those that
can’t teach” is greatly flawed. An educator ensuring that their students can approach them with
any questions or problems they may be having is the ideal goal and best way to foster an
inclusive learning environment, to which I will be implementing in my classroom as a teacher.
Every student should feel safe and passionate to learn what is going to happen in that class.
Certainly, you will have students that will not be passionate about that particular subject, though
if you find ways to implement lessons that speak to their strengths and interests, they will still
put effort into learning. Accommodating students with a vast catalogue of interests, strengths,
and weaknesses in different areas of learning is a struggle, but quite worth the effort.
The incorporation of student’s interests and passions through lesson planning is a
powerful way to make them engage with the material. This can be done by offering more options
in the format of completing assignments. For instance, an English lesson that incorporates
drawing and computer technology would engage art and technology lovers regardless of their
reading level. At the same time, you are developing their skills in English as well, which results
in them participating and potentially enjoying a project in a subject they do not particularly like.
A teacher that is collected, understanding, and passionate about what they are teaching is the
ideal concept of what an educator should be. This is what I hope to strive for throughout my
professional semesters and my teaching career. In closing, teaching is a difficult profession, but
if you have a passion for teaching and desire to better student’s lives, teaching is a worth while
profession that will continue rewarding educators year after year.
