Lesson Plan 1

The lesson plan is for a 40 minute SPED English class at Northview High School. Students will review three comma rules they learned previously by completing a 5 question worksheet. Then they will learn and take notes on two new comma rules - using commas with quotation marks and with appositives. The teacher will model examples of applying the rules. Students will then work in pairs on a comma worksheet, placing commas in sentences. To assess understanding, students will create Kahoot questions about commas to play the next day.

LESSON PLAN

Allocated Time: 40 minutes

Anticipatory Set: (7-10 minutes) Students will work on a comma review about the three rules
we learned the previous day. The students will have 5 questions to go through. They will have to
indicate whether the sentence is written correctly or incorrectly.

Objective and Purpose: Students will be able to restate and use the five comma rules.
Students will be able to write examples of sentences using commas correctly.
Students will be able to correct sentences by putting commas in the right places.

Input and Resources: (10-15 minutes)

Students will continue to use their comma flipbook notes to write in these next two rules.
Rule #4 Quotation Marks-Commas can be used before or after quotation marks.
Rule #5 Appositives-Commas go before and after the appositive.

Identified Modeling: I will be modeling throughout the lesson about where to put the commas
in. Additionally, I will model one of their problems on their partner worksheet.
Checking for Understanding: Throughout the lesson I will be asking if anyone is lost or needs
more clarification. I will also be walking around talking to partners or individuals as they work on
their worksheets. After students finish their partner worksheets and their comma review at the
beginning of class we will go through together to make sure everyone has it right.

Guided Practice: As we go through each new rule I will ask for one volunteer to help me make
a sentence using the rule.

Independent Practice: (10-15 minutes) At the end of the input, I will have students get into
partners of two and work on a comma worksheet. The students will be asked to place the
commas in the correct spots.

Evaluation Criteria: Once students have finished their partner worksheet, we will go through
how to make a Kahoot question. Then I will have the students use the rest of the time to make
as many questions about commas for the Kahoot we will play tomorrow.
