1. Do you think that the usage of English in literature
lessens the “Filipino-ness” of the literary work? Explain.
No, Using English language to express or to deliver a message by means of
literature does not lessen the Filipino-ness of the literary work. Since English is a worldwide language, conveying the Filipino literature in the norm of English language to the world makes our presence more noticeable. Expressing the Filipino cultures for others to understand, makes way for other country to understand what being a Filipino means. Tourist also may increase just by reading literatures about Philippines' famous tourist spot in the norm of English language. One great example of Filipino literature are Jose Rizal's Noli Me Tangere and El Filibutirismo, these novels were not written in Filipino, but the essence of conveying strong and powerful message on the life under the regime of the Spaniards, sparks many Filipino to fight for our country's freedom. As the way of expressing and conveying a message is to show Filipino pride, then using English of other language does not lessen the Filipino-ness of the Philippine Literature. The way we promote and show the pride of the Filipinos by using the English language is a great step for us, making it more reliable and easy to interpret the stories behind Filipino literacy. It is the key to exhibit the talents of our great fellow Filipinos, to show that we are remarkable and we can do great things like others.
