Chapter 6: In Sunny Spain (1882 - 1885)

May 20, 1882

 This Rizalian secret mission was likewise disclosed by priciano in his letter to his younger brother
dated manila.

 when the telegram informing us of your departure was received in Calamba, as it was natural,
our parents grieved, especially the old man (Don Francisco - Z.)

 Became taciturn, always stays in bed and weeping at might, and the consolation offered by
the family, the curate and strangers was of no help.

Secret Departure for Spain- Rizal's departure for Spain was kept secret to avoid detection by the
Spanish authorities and frians.

May 3, 1882

 Rizal departed on board the Spanish steamer "salva dora" bound for Singapore.

 He hastily took paper and pencil and sketched as it vanished in view.

Singapore- During the voyage to Singapore he carefully observed the people and things on board
the steamer. He was the only Filipino, the rest were Spaniards, British, And Indian Negroes.

May 8, 1882-

 while the steamer was approaching Singapore, Rizal saw a beautiful island.

 Fascinated by its scenic beauty, he remembered "talim island with the susong dalaga".

Following Day (May 9)

 The Salvadora docked at Singapore.

 Rizal landed, registered at Hotel de la paz, and spent two days on a sightseeing soiree of the
city, which was a colony of England.

From Singapore to Colombo

 In Singapore, Rizal transferred to another ship, Djemnah, a French steamer, which left
Singapore for Europe on May 11.

May 17

 The Djemnah reached Galle, a seacoast town in southern Ceylon (now Sri Lanka)

 Rizal was unimpressed by this town.

 the following day the Djemnah weighed anchor and resumed the voyage towards Colombo,
the capital of Ceylon.
Chapter 7: Paris to Berlin (1885-87)

1885 – 1886

 He went to Paris to acquire more knowledge in ophthalmology.


 On his way to Paris he stopped at Barcelona to visit Maximo Viola
 He befeiended Senior Eusebio Corominas.

November, 1885

 Rizal was living in Paris


 He worked as an assistant of Dr. Louis De Weckert, a leading French ophthalmologist

January 1, 1886

Rizal wrote a letter to his parent that he was doing well.

February 1, 1886

 He left Paris for Germany


 He visited Strasbourg and other German border.

February 3, 1886

He arrived in Heidelberg, in history city of German for it’s old university

Dr. Otto Becker

Distinguished German Ophthalmologist, Rizal worked for him

April 22, 1886

He wrote a fine poem for his family “A Las Flores De Heidelberg” when he was homesick.

June 25, 1886

He returned to Heidelberg.

June 31, 1886

 He wrote his first letter in German to Professor Ferdinand Bwmentritt


 Rizal lent him book entitled “Aritmetica"

August 6, 1886

 Fifth Centenary of Heidelberg University


 He described the celebration on his letter

August 9, 1886

He left Germany
Chapter 9: Rizal’s Grand Tour in Europe with Viola (1887)

1887: Dr. Maximo Viola agreed to be his travelling companion.

 Rizal had received Paciano’s remittance of P1000.00 then fowarded by Juan Luna in Paris.

 Rizal immediately paid Viola the sum of P300 in order to print the Noli Me Tangere.

May 11, 1887: The Tour Begins

 Their first destination was Dresden, considered as one of the best cities in Germany.

 According to Viola, the luggage of Rizal included all the letter he had received from his family
and friends.

DRESDEN:

 Their visit coincided with the regional floral exposition.

 Rizal studied numerous plant varieties of extraordinary beauty and size.

 They visited Dr. Adolph B. Meyer in the museum of art, which they also visited Rizal. Rizal was
deeply impressed by the “Painting of Prometheus Bound”.

May 13, 1887: First Meeting with Bwementritt

 They greeted each other in fluent German.

 Bwementritt was a kind hearted Austrian professor.

 Bwementritt introduced Rizal to Dr. Carlos Czepelak, an eminent naturalist.

May 16, 1887: They left Leitmeritz by train

May 19, 1887

Rizal wrote Bwementritt, he wrote it in Brunn, Austria, it was also stated in his letter that Rizal
forgot his diamond stickpin at his room in Hotel Krebs.

Prague:

 Carrying the recommendation of Bwementritt, they went to Dr. Willkomm, a professor of


natural history in the University of Prague.
 Rizal and Viola visited the tomb of Copernicus, the famous astronomer.

 They also visited the museum of natural history, the Bacteriological Laboratories, the famous
cave in San Juan Nepomuceno, the Catholic Saint.

May 20: They arrived in Vienna, Capital of Austria-Hungary

 They met Norfenfal, one of the greatest novelist in Europe.


 In Vienna, he received his lost diamond stickpin
 They also met Masner and Nordmann, an Austrian Scholars

May 24: They left Vienna

“Lints to Rheinfall"

 From Lints, they went to Salzburg to savor the famous Munich Beer, reputed to be the best in
Germany.
 From Munich, they went to Nuremberg, one of the oldest city of Germany.
 After Munich, they visited ULM, the cathedral of this city was the largest and tallest in all
Germany.
 From ULM, they went to Stuttgart, Baden, and then Rheinfall.

June 2 – June 3, 188:

They went to SCH AFFHCWSEN, Switzerland, then continued their tour in Bern and Lausanne.

June 19, 1887

Rizal treated Viola a blow-out on his 26th birthday.

June 23, 1887

They parted ways. Viola returned to Barcelona while Rizal continued the tour in Italy.
