Effectiveness of Orange Peelings As Insect Repellent: Mark Anthony Paul Borabo Jonard Estrallado Raff Quillos

This study aims to develop a natural insect repellent using orange peelings. Currently, commercially produced repellents contain chemicals that may have unclear health effects. The study will test the effectiveness of orange peel repellent in terms of smell and duration of protection compared to DEET, the most commonly used and proven repellent. The researchers hypothesize that the orange peel repellent will not be as effective in smell or duration. If successful, the natural repellent could provide a healthier option while benefiting researchers, professors, future studies, families, and the economy. However, the study is limited to testing repellency against soft-bodied insects only using orange peels as the sole ingredient.

Chapter I

Introduction

This study aims to make a natural insect repellent. People usually use
commercially produced insect repellant to kill insects in their house, yet the possible
effects of such products on their health considering they contain a lot of chemicals are
unclear to them.

Background of the Study

Mosquitoes are everywhere and people are indeed exposed to these harmful
insects. Especially during summer where the temperature is warmer allowing the
mosquitoes to roam freely that sometimes causes dengue. What is the most common
way to get rid of mosquitoes?
According to the DOH, avoiding mosquito bites remains the best prevention from
infection adding that there are several practical measures that one can take to avoid
being bitten.
There are plenty of mosquito repellents available in the market, try to use one
that contains DEET. This chemical, when used according to the instructions on their
labels, is safe for both adults and children. DEET has been proven the most effective
chemical repellent on the market, protecting wearers for about five hours, and in its
over 40 years of existence.

An insect repellent (also commonly called "bug spray") is a substance applied to

skin, clothing, or other surfaces which discourages insects(and arthropods in general)
from landing or climbing on that surface. Insect repellents help prevent and control the
outbreak of insect-borne(and other arthropod-bourne) diseases such as malaria, Lyme
disease, & dengue fever.
This study aims to develop an organic insect repellent that doesnt have bad
chemicals for the health of the people.

Statement of the Problem

This Investigatory Project generally aims to produce a insect repellent out of

orange peelings. Specifically, the researchers aim to answer the following questions:

1. The effectiveness of orange peels as an alternative insect killer in terms

of:
1.1 Smell
1.2 Duration
Hypothesis
Based on the problems given, the researchers' hypothesis are as follows:
1. The alternative orange peel insect repellent is not effective in terms of smell.
2. The alternative orange peel insect repellent is not effective in terms of
duration.

Significance of the Study

Researchers The researchers have developed their writing, analysis, and

interpretation skills required to make a good research.
Professors The professors can use this research as an example for the future
researchers in creating a product helping the economy
Future researchers In this research, the proposed product will inspire the other
researchers to develop an effective and efficient insect repellent.
Families They can secure their health and manage their finance.
Economy The proposed product can develop the economy creating a more better
and suitable insect repellent.

Scope and Limitations

The research is focused mainly on the development of organic insect repellent

made out of orange peels and its capability of killing mosquitoes. This organic insect
repellent made out of orange peels only kills the soft bodied insects.
Definition of Terms

Gas Stove – Used to heat the pot with water .

Orange Peels – Used as the main ingredient for the product .
Pot – Used for boiling the water.
Repellent – Used to repel insects like mosquitoes.
Water – Used to extract the Orage peel juice.
