The document is a mid-semester examination for a Vibration Engineering course. It contains 4 questions assessing various concepts in vibration engineering. Question 1 involves determining properties of a damped vibrating system given amplitude ratios. Question 2 involves deriving and graphing expressions for the amplitude of an underdamped, overdamped, and critically damped system. Question 3 involves deriving expressions related to whirling of rotating shafts, resonance sharpness, and transmissibility ratio. Question 4 involves short notes on finding natural frequencies using energy and Rayleigh methods, accelerometers, vibrometers, and signal analyzers.

1 A vibrating system consisting of a mass of 3.0 kg and a spring stiffness of 1900 N/m 15
is viscously damped such that the ratio of any two consecutive amplitudes is 1.00
and 0.95. ( i.e. 1.00 : 0.95) Determine the following;
(a) the natural frequency of the damped system Fig-1
(b) the logarithmic decrement
(c) the damping factor K C
(d) the damping co-efficient
(e) Derive the expression used for the above calculation m

2 Derive the expression for amplitude ‘x(t)’ of the system shown in the Fig-1 for over 15
damped, under damped and critically damped case. Also draw the graphs x(t) vs. t for
. .
the above three cases. Use the initial condition at t=0, x=x(0) = and x = x(0) . For
a system (shown in Fig.1) having m=17.5kg, K=70 N/cm and C=0.7 N/cm/s falls
under which category of damping, justify with proper proof.

3 a) Derive the expression for whirling of rotating shaft. 7

b) Derive the expression for sharpness of resonance stepwise. 5

c) Derive the expression for transmissibility ratio (TR) for a vibrating system. 3

4(i) Write short notes for finding natural frequencies by the (a) Energy method and (b) 6
Rayleigh Method with examples.

(ii) Write short notes on Accelerometer. 3

(iii) Write short notes on Vibrometer. 3

(iv) Write short notes on signal analyzer and data acquisition system. 3
