INTRODUCTION

Dependent Variable

The Effects of Procrastination on the Academic Performace of Grade 12

Students of Servitech Institute AsiaS. Y. 2020-2021. There’s so may students

become more lazy because they always think that they have so many days before

the submission. And sometimes they’re teacher give them another chance to comply

everything. Some students always taken for granted all of the chances that the

teacher always [Link] dependent of academic procrastination is the deadline of

projects or activities assigned to students. These are the tasks that they will only do

when the time is near for the appointed time and day. Nothing happens as long as

the student does not do them because only the student has the ability to do it. To

pass it on and to do it, it needs to be given attention and time for the student to do.

And in the other hand, most of the students didn't do their works in school because

they are addicted to the gadgets, they are using social media everytime. When it's

time to submit the projects they just immediately rush to pass it. Students often

procrastinatinate because they don't see how a project deadline is relevant or

important to them and they don't know how to started, Procrastination can have a

negative effect to every student schoolworks and grades. Students who experience

procrastination some of them experience the stress and low self esteem.

The dependent Variable of academic is the deadline there’s have a lot of

activities or learning task to do and pass it on the right time that the teacher said. As

Practical Research 2 4
SERVITECH INSTITUTE ASIA
long as the student they can they need to pass it and to do it, students need to give a

lot of attention and time to do it well. The most problem why student did not pass it

on time because they simply do playing gadgets and spend time on social media.

Sometimes the problem start in our self(student) because we did not think what

happen if we don’t do our activities on time, then we started to overthink and its

going to be a main problem of every student, as long as we can be responsible and

do first the school works that we need to prioritize. Procrastination is one of the many

roadblocks that could hinder you down to greater achievements. Procrastination is

an active process that you choose to do something else instead of the task. That you

know you should be doing. If they procrastinate over a period of time. We can

become demotivated and disillusioned with our work which can lead depression.

Sometimes the reason why they can’t do it right away because they are short on

time. Because some students have jobs and others are more likely to do other

school works and they only focus on one project so they forget to do the other tasks

they will do.

Independent Variables

The Effects of Procrastination on the Academic Performace of Grade 12

Students of Servitech Institute AsiaS. Y. 2020-2021. The independent, on the other

hand, refers to the student. Because it depends on whether they will do it or not

because sometimes there are students who experience anxiety, depression, family

problems or self-problems because of this they do not do their school work right

away. Because they are affected by what is happening in their lives so they do not

Practical Research 2 5
SERVITECH INSTITUTE ASIA
do it sooner rather than later. So they affect their learning or doing their projects.

Procrastination has typically defined as a trait of behavioral disposition to postpone

or delay performing a task or making decisions. Some of student are lack of the

metacognitive skills, They need to be able to study effectively such as the ability to

schedule time for studying or knowing when to ask for help. Students need to learn

the time management to every student to pass their project or the task. And every

students need to pass their works that assigned to them but most of the students

are didn't do their works so it depends to the students if they pass their task

immediately because every students are having a struggle to their life and some of

are overthink if they can do the task correctly.

Independent, refers to other student that experience different types of

problems, not all students are having a same standard or same capability to do

activities etc. A lot of them experience depression, anxiety or family problem, usually

acada problem like for example in our situation now is not easy because of the virus

all of us is having adjustment in our life. All of us is affected so they affect their

learning or doing their activities. Student need to do their best to do a lot of things

like project learning task etc, they need to manage their time to pass it on time, as

long as the student can pass it on time to avoid overthingking and depression. So

procrastination occurs because they do not do it while the deadline is still far. They

only think of doing it when the load is near and when they are running out of time. So

the result sometimes is that they do not do well or are not that good. Some reasons

why students procrastinate because some of them are lack of interest and lack of

motivation. Some students thinks that they’re not the only one would don not pass

Practical Research 2 6
SERVITECH INSTITUTE ASIA
the project before the submission. They always depends their grades with other

students, if their classmates didn’t passed their project, they don’t even passed to.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

The researchers believe that student’s procrastination should be stop for the

students may produce negative outcomes. Students do not want to make necessary

work and feel the serious stress. Procrastinating in Senior high school causes

anxiety and drops in success, which can lead to long-term problems (Zoe Levin).

With this problem, they are most likely not to give great attention with this bad habit.

Therefore, in response with this problem, the researchers will try to answer the

following questions to give more further knowledge on student’s procrastination;

1. What is the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of:

1.1 Name (optional)

1.2 Age

1.3 Gender

2. Why do grade 12 of Servitech Institute Asia procratinate?

2.1 create a better ideas?

2.2 makes work faster?

3. What are the causes why Grade12 students of Servitech Institute Asia

procrastinate?

3.2 Become more lazy this time of pandemic?

3.2 lack of time?

Review of Related Literature

Practical Research 2 11
SERVITECH INSTITUTE ASIA
This chapter contains the data and information that the researchers have

gathered in relation with the study of the effects of procrastination to grade 12

students of Servitech Institute Asia. It is to clarify and prove the connection of other

literature that is similar to the study. In the part of the researchers, these related

literatures could help them understand the subject and expand their knowledge

about the topic.

Foreign Literature

The foreign students’ academic procrastination depends on how they value

their grades and their own list of priorities. According to Burka and Yuen (1983), it is

common for college students to delay academic tasks to the point of experiencing

considerable anxiety. In their references in Academic procrastination, Lay, Knish,

and Zanatta (1992) expand upon this definition to include specific behaviors that

contribute to student procrastination. The authors stated that academic

procrastination stems from, “a lack of practice or preparation, reduced effort, and

perhaps...unfavorable performance settings, but atleast the selection of unfavorable

preparation settings. For example, students may choose to study in places that will

promote distraction and delay”.

It is important to point out that academic procrastination does not always

result to these consequences. Sometimes, delaying work on a project can be

functional. Called “strategic delay” (Klingsieck, 2013), which helps the students focus

more on the task and obtain ideas before working on it. But in contrast,

procrastination can result to more negative consequences than positive ones.

Practical Research 2 12
SERVITECH INSTITUTE ASIA

For the purpose of this research, Academic procrastination can be defined as

the delay of an important task in school that could result to low grades and

performance. It is the nonessential delay that could lead to negative consequences,

such as feeling anxious and to disregard the completion of the project. Researchers

have found that procrastination is correlated with increased stress, more illness and

fewer healthy behaviors (Sirois, Melia-Gordon, & Pychyl, 2003).

Local Literature

Much of Philippine history yields to an analysis assuming procrastination to be

the dominant way of life in this country. The main reason is that the country, common

people as well as the authorities tend to avoid any serious confrontation with their

objective challenges of poverty, criminality, corruption and systemic oligarchy.

Settling for paper resolutions that rhetorically address these concerns, ordinary

Filipinos postpone their day of reckoning, moving from one day to the next with false

hopes that their nation’s condition would improve ; or, at the very least, stabilize;

through propitious divine intervention or some other equally unfathomable and

probably alien force. For them, procrastination is the inevitable consequence of a

long history of their popular marginalization of being systematically political

disempowered that has left them with little sense of efficacy in political life. They

exist as objects, largely at the mercy of willful governors; they are not competent

subjects able to contest or hold accountable their political wardens.

([Link])

Practical Research 2 13
SERVITECH INSTITUTE ASIA
One possible factor that affects students’ performance in school is the

Filipino’s mañana habit (mamayana) or what we call as, Procrastination. The

preponderance of procrastination research is most common among college students,

estimating as high as 80-95% (Pfister, 2002; Steel, 2002; Ellis &Knaus,

2002). This phenomenon is ubiquitous for several researchers had studied its

deleterious effects. A student who is a chronic procrastinator tends to have a low

academic class standing and low grades (Solomon & Rothblum, as cited by Lee,

2005; Tice & Baumeister, 1997), affective and health problems (Tice & Baumeister,

1997), and may also lead to cheating and plagiarism (Roig & DeTomasso 1995), as

cited by Beck, Koons & Milgrim, 2000). Data were collected and analyzed from 30

undergraduates – comprised of 17 dean’s listers and 13 probationary students –

from the Colegio de San Juan de Letran, Manila. The results indicated that there is a

significant relationship between Procrastination and Achievement Goal Orientation.

The results also indicated that Procrastination was a predictor of student’s Academic

Performance (GWA) in school.

CHAPTER V

SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATION

Practical Research 2 24
SERVITECH INSTITUTE ASIA
This chapter focused on the summary of the findings, conclusions and

recommendations drawn from this study based on the analysis and interpretation of

the outcomes of this study.

The primary objective of this research is to know the effects of procrastination

among Grade 12 Students of Servitech Institute Asia S.Y. [Link] specific

questions raised on the studies were as follow: (1)What is the demographic profile of

the respondents in terms of age and gender?,(2)Why do grade 12 students in

Servitech Institute Asia procrastinate?,(3)What are the causes why Grade12

students of Servitech Institute Asia procrastinate? The respondents of this study

were the grade 12 students of Servitech Institute Asia Sy 2020-2021. The said

respondents were chosen randomly to ensure validity and reliability of the results.

Conclusion:

The respondents of the study were composed of 17-18 years old Grade 12

students in which 78% are females and 22% are males. Majority of the 100

respondents procrastinate because of Lack of time, makes us work faster. Creating

better idea is the next most selected positive effect of procrastination. Adrenaline

rush, and waiting until the last minute forces us to focus are the third most selected

positive effect. Procrastinating makes things easier is the least selected positive

effect of procrastination.

Practical Research 2 25
SERVITECH INSTITUTE ASIA

Therefore, the positive effect of procrastinating makes the students work

faster and they create better ideas.

On the other hand, the negative effects that was tallied and summarized are

as follows.

(1)Highly stressed is the most selected negative effect of procrastinating.

(2)Forgetfulness is the next most selected negative effect of procrastinating.

(3)Lower Grades, Anxiety and Depression are the third most selected

negative effect of procrastinating. Whenever students procrastinate they tend to be

anxious.

And lastly, (4) lower expectations is the least selected negative effect of

procrastinating.

One factor that makes procrastination negative is the lower expectation.

Lower expectation is the lack of time to think or to do well and it results as a failure or

not done well. As example of this, if the students write a research in a very short

time, it makes the research not possible and questionable one.

Therefore, procrastinating makes the students highly stressed and forgetfulness.

Practical Research 2 26
SERVITECH INSTITUTE ASIA
RECOMMENDATION

The researchers would like to recommend this study to the following:

STUDENTS

Students, you know the good and bad effects of procrastination. You must use it

as your advantage to become a better student in the future. Be responsible on what

you do because at the end you will suffer the consequences of it.
