    body'sinternallivingtissuesandorgans.Italsokeepsthebodyfromdehydrating,
    Severetemperaturechanges,hassensoryglandstohelpusdistinguishthedifference
    betweenfabricsandwhethersomethingfeelsgoodorcausesuspain.Another
    benefitingfactorofourintegumentarysystemisthatithelpstoreleasewastesuchas
    sweatandtears.Theskinhelpsregulatebodytemperatureandhelpsslowdownwater
    lossbydiffusionfromdeepertissues.OurIntegumentarysystemalsoworkstogether

    TheEpidermis

    Theepidermiscoversmostofthebodyanditsjobistoprotectourdermislayer.
    Structurally,theepidermisisonlyaboutatenthofamillimeterthickbutismadeof40to
    50rowsofstackedsquamousepithelialcells.Theepidermisismadeupofthestratum
    corneum,stratumlucidum,stratumgranulosum,stratumspinosum,stratumbasale.It
    alsocontainssweatglandpores,sweatandhair.Allofthemhaveimportantfunctionsor
    meaningsbehindthem.TheStratumCorneumistheoutermostlayerconsistingofdead
    cells.StratumLucidumisathinalmosttranslucentlayerofdeadskincellsandis
    locatedonthepalmsofyourhandsandthesolesofyourfeet.Originatingfromthelatin
    wordclearlayerLucidumgotitsnameforitthinandalmostnonvisibleappearance.
    NowtheStratumGranulosumisknownasthewaterproofinglayeroftheepidermisitis
    madeupofthreetofivelayersofflattenedgranularcells.Keratinaccumulatesinthis
    layerandisalsoknownasthegranularlayer.StratumSpinosumgathereditsname
    fromitsspinyappearanceandarelargeovalshapednucleiwithdevelopingfibersof
    keratinthatarebecomingflattenedandwilleventuallymaketheirwaytothestratum
    Granulosum.ThefinallayeroftheepidermisistheStratumBasaleandisthedeepest
    layeritismadeupofasinglerowofcuboidalcells.Melanocytesarecontainedinthis
    layeralso.Melanocytesproducethepigmentcalledmelaninfromtheaminoacidin
    organellescalledmelanosomes.Whatmelanindoesisprovideskincolorandabsorbs
    ultravioletradiationfromthesunlight.Ifyouweretocontainamutationinyourmelanin
    genesitwouldbeaconditioncalledalbinismandcanaffectanyandallraces.Albinism
    canbeinherited.
    Aroundtheworld,betweenonein17,000andonein20,000people
    arealbinos.

    TheDermis
    Thedermislaysundertheepidermisandthedeepestlayer.Itismostlymadeup
    ofnervoustissue,bloodandbloodvessels.Insideofthedermislaysthesebaceous
    gland,thesudoriferousgland,capillarybeds.Rightbelowthedermisthethe
    hypodermiswhichistheinnermostthickestlayeroftheskin.Itconnectstothedermis
    thankstocollagenandelasticfibers.Oneofthemajorfunctionsofthehypodermisisit
    actsasaenergyreserve.
