Q2) They are typified as free-swimming marine animals consisting of a gelatinous umbrella-
shaped bell and trailing tentacles. The bell can pulsate for locomotion, while stinging
tentacles can be used to capture prey.
Q3) Jellyfish are found in every ocean, from the surface to the deep sea.
Q4) Jellies are carnivorous, feeding on plankton, crustaceans, fish eggs, small fish and other
jellyfish, ingesting and voiding through the same hole in the middle of the bell. Jellies hunt
passively using their tentacles as drift nets.
Q5) Other species of jellyfish are among the most common and important jellyfish predators,
some of which specialize in jellies. Other predators include tuna, shark, swordfish, sea turtles,
and at least one species of Pacific salmon. Sea birds sometimes pick symbiotic crustaceans
from the jellyfish bells near the sea's surface, inevitably feeding also on the jellyfish hosts of
these amphipods or young crabs and shrimp.
Q6) Jellyfish protect their selves by stinging predators with their tentacles or with their oral
arms. Jellyfish have cells called cnidocytes, which contain nematocysts, and located on their
tentacles and on their manubrium. Whenever a predator comes in contact with cnidocytes,
hundreds to thousands of cnidae (filaments of the nematocysts) are ejected into the predator's
direction. Nematocysts' cnidae inoculate a poisonous or allergenic mixture into the predator's
body.
Q7) Jellyfish reproduce both sexually and asexually. The adult jellyfish release sperm and
eggs into the water, where the eggs are fertilized. In some species, the sperm actually swim in
the jellyfish's mouth and fertilize the egg that way.
Q8) No threats apart from the predators.
Q9) I like the most is their outer physical shape the most, as they are very flexible and
transparent and look very peaceful and attractive.
Q10) An interesting fact about jellyfish is that they have been around for almost 770 million
years. And their size can range from 4 millimeters to 2 meters in diameter and their life span
range from few hours to six months.
