1949: Movie theatre in Spring Grove burns

1999 – 25 years ago

  • This year capped a century of astonishing progress. Yet, computers, now central to life and business since the late 20th century, seem vulnerable. City streets are safer, but the country is more worried than ever about deadly violence in schools and at work.
  • Time Magazine named Albert Einstein the Person of the Century.

1974 – 50 years ago

  • The top stories in 1974 included Watergate: Nixon resigning, the economy, the energy crisis, Patricia Hearst, Ford’s pardon of Nixon, the November elections, and clemency for war resisters.
  • U.S. District Judge Miles Lord, whose role in the Reserve Mining Co. trail was named Minnesota Newsmaker of 1974 by The Associated Press.

1949 – 75 years ago

  • A fire destroyed the Spring Grove Theater. The evening box office had just opened, and the fire spread from the basement and burned the newly decorated theater. About ten patrons who were in the theater saw and smelled smoke and were able to safely evacuate.
  • All college bowl games will be broadcast on the radio. Coverage includes Cotton, Orange, Sugar, Gator, Rose, and East-West Bowl.

1924 – 100 years ago

  • The Singer Store in Rochester will call at your home and adjust your sewing machine for $1.00.
  • At the Baihly and Rommel Market, a 3-pound can of Arrow coffee costs $1.65 and sugar-cured sliced bacon costs 30 cents a pound.
