New Art City - REVERSE TAR PIT

New Art City: REVERSE TAR PIT

  • November 30th, 6-8PM

𝘙𝘌𝘝𝘌𝘙𝘚𝘌 𝘛𝘈𝘙 𝘗𝘐𝘛 is a group exhibition that launches alongside 103 internet art exhibitions as part of The Wrong Biennale, five of which are hosted at New Art City. Join us at Onassis ONX in New York City for a reception, installation, and artist talks on November 30th from 6-8pm. This exhibition is the first in a series of experiments led by New Art City exploring new forms of hybrid exhibition modalities, as the virtual-first gallery expands into physical spaces.

From a seething sludge of digital debris and depleted fossil fuels, the zombie corpses of unminted NFTs rise shedding oily droplets of virtual decay. The included works began as digital files forgotten in the labyrinths of obsolete servers and subjected to the high pressures of networked hypermodernity, and now rise to take their revenge against a world drowning in media disinformation. They are fossils of software fragments, glitch-processed video, mutated 3D polygons, and keening audio tracks. Their file names glow with curatorial themes of decay and transformation, preservation and decomposition. It’s art for an anthropocene acutely aware of the cyclical nature of its own consumption and mortality.

New Art City is a virtual exhibition toolkit for new media art with a focus on copresence and experiencing digital art together. Shows are real-time multiplayer and accessed using a web browser on computer or mobile device, with no need to register, install extra software or enter any personal information. Using built-in tools to manage artworks and space layouts, curators and organizers can create a show and hold a virtual exhibition online. Participants can attend virtual openings together, chat and see each other moving around the space while experiencing digital art in its original format. Our creative team is Don Hanson, Benny Lichtner, and Sammie Veeler.

The Wrong Biennale is an independent, multicultural, decentralized and collaborative international art biennial, founded in 2013 by David Quiles Guilló, and organized by The Wrong Studio. The Wrong has grown to become a huge international community and a benchmark in the art scene, which brings together thousands of curators, artists and institutions every two years, online and offline, obtaining institutional recognition and awards such as SOIS Cultura 2019 and an honorable mention of the European Commission’s S+T+ARTS 2020 Awards. Since 2013, The Wrong Biennale has presented works by ten thousand artists and curators, exhibited in six hundred pavilions, embassies and institutions around the world.

Onassis ONX is an accelerator for a global community of member artists who create immersive XR and AI works. This hybrid experimentation, production and exhibition space is located in the Olympic Tower in Midtown Manhattan and was founded in 2020 in partnership between the Onassis Foundation and NEW INC. Onassis ONX now exists as a project of Onassis Culture, working in partnership with organizations in New York, including New York University’s Tandon School, Games for Change, NEW INC, Rhizome, and MAX, as well as with global institutions such as IDFA, CPH:DOX, DiMoDA, and others. Offering development funding, state-of-the-art facilities, advocacy, and community for an international community of artists from a broad range of disciplines, Onassis ONX has become an influential hub and manifestation of the dynamism of a new global interdisciplinary artistic ecosystem.
