Help us develop technology that powers the truth.

What We Do

At The New York Times, our mission is to seek truth and help people understand the world. It’s big. Our Technology organization supports our mission by providing a best-in-class digital experience to the millions of people who engage with our products every day in their quest to understand the world. From news to audio, Cooking, Wirecutter and Games, our talented tech team creates a unique and seamless experience through product optimization and development.

Our team has a vast and diverse array of backgrounds, characteristics and skill sets, but we find harmony in our commitment to our mission and to creating a culture that’s empathetic, open, inclusive and dedicated to continuous improvement in our craft.

There has never been a more exciting time to work in Tech at The Times. Our engineers, designers, data analysts, project managers and more, are creating an unparalleled journey for our users in the way that they experience The Times and all that we have to offer.

Hiring Process

We believe that a variety of backgrounds, experiences and skill sets makes us — our technology, our products and our company — better. Our team includes bootcamp graduates, former designers and more.

There’s no one type of person or developer we’re looking for. We want people who share our values — independence, integrity, curiosity, respect, collaboration, excellence — and are committed to the mission of The Times.

Our hiring process varies slightly from role to role, but for the most part, it will go like this:

  1. After you apply, our hiring managers and recruiting team will review your application and, if they think it’s a good match, a recruiter will reach out to schedule a phone call. On this call, you will discuss your work to date and make sure the role meets your career goals.
  2. You’ll have a call with a hiring manager or a member of one of the teams you are being considered for — it’s an opportunity for you to find out about the role and ask questions.
  3. You might be asked to do a short exercise or assessment, depending on the role.
  4. We’ll set up a few interviews during which you’ll meet with various members of the team(s) you’re being considered for.
  5. Our hiring panel will meet to review your candidacy and make a decision. We will let you know either way as soon as possible.

Your Development

Our Technology organization values developing our people as much as we do developing our software.

Learning: As a learning organization, we are committed to ensuring all technology employees have the time, space and resources necessary to continuously learn and grow. In addition to a companywide tuition reimbursement program, all technology employees set aside a week every year to focus on their learning, development and growth. You can use these five days to learn from colleagues, host a session on a project you are passionate about and work collaboratively to develop and build new ideas and tools.

Career Ladders: We understand the need to know what your next step is, so every role in technology has an associated manager and technical career ladder that outlines the criteria and qualifications that are considered in promotion.

Questions

Do I need a computer science degree to be an engineer at The Times?

No. There’s no one background we are looking for — from designers to career developers— if you have the skill sets we’re looking for and your values align with ours, we want to talk to you.

I’m not based in New York — can I still apply?

Yes. While the bulk of our tech team is based in our New York headquarters, our remote work policy is flexible and our workplace is entirely hybrid. We have developers based in St. Louis, Denver, San Francisco and several other cities across the United States.

Is there a limit to how many positions I can apply for?

No, we encourage you to apply to any role you believe matches your skill set and experience.

Do I need a journalism background to work in tech at The New York Times?

No, but a passion for journalism’s mission of seeking the truth and helping people understand the world is a must for all roles.

Will I be considered for roles outside of the one I applied for?

Yes. With hiring needs changing regularly, we will consider you for all open roles that you might be a good fit for. We’ll always check with you if we want to move forward with you for a role you didn’t apply for.
