In individuals receiving an allogeneic haematopoietic cell transplant, stem cells in the bone marrow, which give rise to blood and immune cells, are replaced with those from a donor. Genome-sequencing analyses in donorâ€“recipient pairs years after transplantation show an accelerated loss of clonal diversity in the blood stem cells of recipients compared with those of donors.

Evidence that engineered muscle could patch up failing hearts

Sustainable engraftment of heart muscle cells (cardiomyocytes) can be achieved by implanting patches of engineered heart muscle onto the surface of the heart under immune suppression. Evidence from rhesus macaques and an individual with advanced heart failure suggests that structural and functional augmentation of the failing heart is possible.
