Read More >William Primps is a highly experienced litigator, arbitrator and mediator who has enjoyed a long and distinguished legal career focusing on insurance, reinsurance, energy and antitrust matters. He has been an advocate for corporate clients in high-valued arbitrations and mediations where he has represented international insurance and reinsurance companies, financial institutions and Fortune 500 companies, as well as sports leagues and teams.
Since 2010, Mr. Primps has served as counsel to the North American CRO (Chief Risk Officers) Council, a trade association with a membership including virtually all of the largest property/casualty and life insurers in North America. In 2022, Mr. Primps was appointed by Order of Presiding Justice Acosta, to serve as Special Master on the Appellate Division, First Department’s Pre-argument Conference Program. He has also served as Counsel to the Special Master appointed by the Chief Judge of the Second Circuit to redraw New York State’s Congressional boundaries. He managed to bring all the congresspeople to a consensus that reduced the Congressional delegation from 31-29.
In 2021, Mr. Primps was appointed to the New York 9th Judicial District, Roster of Commercial Mediators for Westchester, Putnam, Orange, and Rockland Counties.
Reinsurance: Mr. Primps has represented ceding companies, reinsurers and their advisors in major litigations, arbitrations, and mediations. These representations have included both plaintiffs/claimants and defendants/respondents, as well as accountants, actuaries and consultants. He has litigated in various federal and state courts involving the rehabilitation and liquidation of a major Kentucky reinsurer. He also represented a Finnish reinsurer in claims against a large domestic ceding company generating multi-million-dollar recoveries. Mr. Primps was lead litigation counsel for a Tokyo-based insurer in post 9/11 litigation in various courts and ADR tribunals throughout the United States winning seven and eight-figure recoveries on behalf of his clients.
Insurance: He has been involved in large representations with U.S. offshore, Japanese and European insurers in state and federal courts, as well as arbitrations and mediations, representing both property/casualty and life companies as well as brokers and advisory firms. Many of his cases have included claims of fraud, actuarial and accounting malpractice and mismanagement. In 2021, he also served on a three-person panel in an insurance arbitration.
Energy: Significant cases Mr. Primps has handled include large federal court disputes relating to the impact of Nuclear Regulatory Commission rules on construction of nuclear plants in New York; he has represented Canada’s largest state-owned utility company in an international arbitration, determining whether design and construction defects allowed rescission of a multi-year, multi-billion-dollar contract; and he represented an architect-engineer in an international construction arbitration concerning a clean coal generating facility in Pennsylvania. This arbitration included a mediation in which a $41 million settlement was arranged among the parties’ various insurers.
He also serves as a Justice in the Bronxville Village Court and has mediated a variety of other types of cases including landlord-tenant disputes, business dissolution and personal injury matters.
