It’s easy to see why queen beds are the most popular mattress size in the United States. They fit in most bedrooms, and they provide optimal sleeping space for both couples who share a bed or individuals who like to sprawl out. The standard size of a queen bed is 60 inches wide and 80 inches long. They don’t have a standard depth, but most mattresses are between nine and 16 inches thick. There are three other queen bed sizes in addition to these standard dimensions. Read on to find out which one you need.
Do queen beds come in other sizes?
If you could use some more sleeping space, but your room can’t accommodate a king-size bed, you still have a few queen bed size options. If you want a little more elbow room, Olympic queen bed dimensions are 66 inches wide and 80 inches long.
For those who need more foot room, a California queen bed is four inches longer than the standard queen, with dimensions of 60 inches wide and 84 inches long.
Then, there is a split queen, which is the same size as a standard queen, but the mattress is split into two. Each side measures 30 inches wide and 80 inches long. Split queen mattresses are used on adjustable beds.

How big is a queen-size bed frame?
Some mattresses fit flush against the bed frame, and other frames are a couple of inches wider and/or longer than the mattress. You’ll find most queen-size bed frames between 60 to 65 inches wide and 80 to 82 inches long. A bed frame can tie a room’s design together, so choose a bed frame based on the style you’re going for. If you want the bedding to be center stage, buy a 60-by-80-inch bed frame and drape your comforter over each side. If you want a bold look, buy a bigger frame and a shorter duvet cover to make the frame and headboard appear more pronounced. Queen-size bed frames also have a center support to prevent the mattress from sagging. This maintains a comfortable mattress for longer.
Will all queen-size sheets fit all queen beds?
Fitted queen sheets are only made to fit standard queen-size beds (60 by 80 inches and no more than 15 inches deep). It’s best to order bedding specifically for your bed if you have an Olympic, California or split queen bed.

How much does a queen-size bed cost?
The cost of queen-size beds is another testament to their popularity. Bed frames are affordable and bedding is easy to find. Mattresses are fairly priced and lower maintenance thanks to the center support on queen-size bed frames. They’re available in a variety of materials, like memory foam and antimicrobial fabric, and have a large cost range ($100-$8,500) so you can find a queen-size bed within your budget.

- Flip and rotate your mattress every other season.
- Let the mattress breathe uncovered for an hour every time you wash your bedding.
- Vacuum your mattress at least twice a year to remove dust, hair and dead skin.
- Keep your bedroom cool to reduce humidity and the chance of mites.
- Prevent all monkeys and pets from jumping on your bed.
Which bed is right for you?
Queen-size beds are common for couples sharing a bed and extra spacious for individuals. If you’re an active sleeper, you’re less likely to disrupt your partner by tossing and turning in a queen-size bed than a full-size bed. To determine whether you need a larger bed, you and your partner should lie down on the mattress and put your hands behind their heads. If your elbows touch, you should consider an Olympic queen bed. If your feet hang off the edge, look into a California queen bed. Here’s a cheat sheet for queen-size bed measurements:
