A duvet cover is a removable layer that protects a duvet insert. A duvet cover is optional but recommended to keep a duvet clean; unlike dry clean-only duvets, you can easily remove and wash duvet covers with the rest of your bedding at home. Sometimes reversible and usually more affordable than comforters, duvet covers allow you to update your bed or room without completely redecorating.
What is a Duvet?
A duvet insert fits snugly inside a duvet cover, which is often sold separately. The insert is essentially a soft, flat bag that’s filled with down, feathers, wool or synthetic fibers. It might be helpful to think of duvets and duvet covers as you do pillows and pillowcases.
What is a duvet cover set?
Duvet sets are very versatile and surprisingly lightweight. With a warm layer underneath, you can use a duvet without a cover for extra insulation. On hot summer nights, you can use a duvet cover without an insert as a second sheet. Duvets are simpler than most bedding sets, since they are designed as a single covering to be used without a top sheet or blanket. Some duvet sets include matching shams, but the draw of a duvet is to create an effortless, tossed-together look.

How Do You Put a Duvet Cover On?
Duvet covers are made of two fabric sides attached by a hidden zipper, ties or buttons. You fasten the cover with interior loops or tabs to secure the duvet insert in place, preventing it from shifting or bunching up within the cover. Laying a duvet at the foot of the bed is a popular choice.
Duvet vs. Comforter:
Duvets are sometimes referred to as comforters, however, duvets are smaller and simpler than most comforters. They’re used with a cover and they minimize the amount of hangover on the bed.
Comforters are usually more decorative and are designed to drape over the sides of the bed. They contain less fill that’s evenly distributed and secured by stitching, so they don’t require a cover. Comforters are intended to be matched with sheets and shams and sometimes sold as a coordinating bed-in-a-bag set.
