need advice on colorfasting

My daughters want me to make them Christmas tree skirts. I am far from a sewing expert, but thought I could do this. I've bought the material & cut them out. I'm making them reversible - red on one side & cream on the other. I want to make sure the red color does not bleed onto the cream color. Has anyone used the 1 cup salt or white vinegar to a gallon recipe to soak the fabric in? If so, does it really work? Since I'm investing some money to get the skirts embroidered, I want to make sure that the colors do not bleed. I posted on Sewing forum, but not as much activity as here. Thanks in advance!
