Tucked between the stunning He‘eia Fishpond and the majestic Ko‘olau Mountain Range in Windward O‘ahu lies Kāko‘o ‘Ōiwi, a nonprofit organization on a mission to revive the lo‘i kalo (taro fields) that once flourished in the valley. These fields, which stretched nearly the entire length of He‘eia, were vital to the community’s self-sufficiency and cultural practices. Today, the organization is working to restore these ancient agricultural traditions while providing fresh, locally grown kalo to the community.

This month, we also highlight the extraordinary life of 104-year-old Esther Nowell. While she undoubtedly has a lifetime of stories to share, it’s her current journey that captivated us. A celebrated artist, Nowell recently wrapped up a sold-out watercolor workshop at the Downtown Arts Center in Honolulu. Teaching and creating art for decades, Nowell is a beacon of creativity and passion.

We then take you to Anapau Place in Waikele, Central O‘ahu, where a special kind of holiday magic happens every year. For the past few decades, this neighborhood has become renowned for its extravagant Christmas light displays, with each home decked out in hundreds of thousands of lights—many designed with a unique theme.

Yet this light show is more than just a holiday tradition; it’s also a testament to community spirit. The families behind the Waikele Christmas Lights go beyond spreading seasonal cheer, using their display to raise funds for local charities.
