Canal clean sweep

Volunteers clean a canal bank in Lyons during the 2022 Canal Clean Sweep.

LYONS — Volunteers will gather April 20, weather permitting, for the 19th annual Erie Canal Clean Sweep.

The event is being coordinated by the Lyons Erie Canalway Greeters and the Lyons Community Center.

The effort begins at 9 a.m., behind the former American Legion at 27 Water St., with registration and free T-shirts. Participants are encouraged to dress for the weather and bring tools such as nippers, clippers, rakes, and shovels. They are advised to wear gloves but not flip-flops, organizers said.

Volunteers will work on the canal bank on the north side of the Erie, between the Geneva Street/Route 14 bridge, and west to Lock E27.

At the southside canal park, volunteers will work from the park entrance to the Canandaigua Outlet spillway.

Additionally, a third group of volunteers will collect litter and debris along the canal bank and bike trail from Lock E27 to Abbey Park.

The volunteer work session concludes at noon with pizza and surprises, organizers said.

The event is part of the Great Lakes Watershed Cleanup, with support from state Parks and Trails, the New York State Canal Corp., and the Town of Lyons.
