Maruti Suzuki Brezza is a sub-4 metre compact SUV and one of the highest-selling vehicles in its segment. It was first launched in 2016 and since then has received two major updates— one in 2020 and the other in 2022. Maruti Suzuki Brezza review

The path to becoming the number one compact SUV is tough, but to remain as the top dog for six years shows the test of mettle. Maruti Suzuki’s erstwhile Vitara Brezza continued to churn out over 10,000 units per month before it was forced to make way for its second-generation avatar. The new compact SUV continues to be based on the same Global C-Platform, and why not it previously received a 4-star safety rating from Global NCAP, but apart from that everything else is new from the outside, and cabin and now offers a long list of features, including segment firsts that could make the competition nervous. We decipher the new Brezza and find out whether it can retain its crown as it will compete against the Tata Nexon, Mahindra XUV300, the newly-launched Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, and the Nissan Magnite.

2022 Maruti Suzuki Brezza: The bragging rights

Let’s start with the state-of-the-art features. Maruti Suzuki has not only answered the prayers of many of its customers but has introduced many smart segment-first features. After reigning in the Indian automotive market for over three decades, the Brezza is the first Maruti vehicle to sport a sunroof. It may not be the most practical aspect but the company has conceded to the popular choice. The sunroof is available in the top two trims. 

Maruti Suzuki has replaced the 7-inch infotainment system with a bigger 9-inch Smartplay Pro+ touch screen though the former is available in the VXi and ZXi trims. Both the systems are compatible with Android and Apple smartphones as they come with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. The top two variants, the ZXi and ZXi+, boast six speakers with Arkamy’s sound system. The Brezza has a wireless phone charging pad and according to Maruti Suzuki, it ensures that the mobile phone doesn’t heat up.  

In terms of safety, the top model is equipped with six airbags, otherwise dual airbags come standard for the rest of the variants. Taking a leaf or two from the new Baleno, the Brezza is the first in the segment to offer a 5.4-inch head-up display (HUD) that reads out numerous helpful information like speed, rpm, fuel economy, air condition functions, warning notifications etc. The brightness and angle of the HUD can also be adjusted according to seat position. 

The new Brezza drives away parking woes with the help of a 360-degree camera and it comes with multiple view modes, three each for front and rear. Apart from that, there’s a 3D view of the vehicle’s surroundings and the Approaching Object Detection (AOD) sends warning alerts once it detects objects or people near the car.

Like most of the other SUVs, the new Brezza has car connect features via the new Suzuki Connect. It can be synced with a smartwatch and Alexa Skill connectivity. What was slightly surprising is that Maruti Suzuki decided not to add ventilated front seats, but still no harm, no foul. 

2022 Maruti Suzuki Brezza: Stingy in fuel economy

The second-generation Brezza does retain the same capacity 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine, but it now gets dual injectors, which ensures that the powertrain is the most fuel-efficient in its class. According to Maruti Suzuki, the new Brezza manual returns over 20 kmpl while the automatic over 19.5 kmpl. At 102bhp, the revamped engine is a couple of ponies less than the first-gen Brezza, but the difference can’t really be felt and it retains the same 136 Nm of torque.  

The engine offers effortless pull, especially in slow-moving traffic which makes it ideal for daily commute. Even though it may not have a powerful midrange gusto like the turbo petrol, it still manages enough poke to ensure it feels peppy.  

The new 6-speed automatic in many ways has similar traits to the defunct 4-speed torque converter. As it’s tuned to return high economy figures, it takes a couple of seconds before it upshifts or downshifts. The new torque converter gearbox likes to coast on the highway and in a mellow manner tackles slow-moving traffic. It doesn’t like to be hurried, but then it also makes driving a child’s play in its effortless manner. The Brezza does come with paddle shifters which wake up the transmission and make it more responsive.  

The Brezza retains its tried and tested 5-speed manual gearbox, which is slick and slots in easily and is added with a light clutch, it makes the driving experience a breeze, pardon the pun. This transmission makes the engine more responsive and gets the best out of the engine in terms of performance.   

The 1.5-litre engine now comes standard with a mild-hybrid system, earlier only the automatic came equipped. It has regenerative braking, a start/stop system and a lithium-ion battery that gives the engine a mild boost.

2022 Maruti Suzuki Brezza: Spruced up cabin

The Brezza comes with a dual-tone black and brown cabin with silver inserts. The quality of the plastics has improved with its solid build, but the finish could have been better. It comes with all connectivity ports like a USB and 12 Volt socket in front and two charging slots, including a Type-C in the rear below the AC vents. Maruti Suzuki has tried to give the cabin a snazzy look with ambient lighting. The flat-bottom steering wheel is fairly light and will be appreciated by many especially while negotiating narrow lanes and start-stop traffic.

Cabin space has always been the Brezza’s forte and continues to offer room for three adults in the rear, including legroom. Maruti Suzuki’s seats have always been on the softer side and the Brezza is no different, but here’s a cheat code, you can opt for upholstery with additional cushion and support. 

2022 Maruti Suzuki Brezza: Exterior styling elements

The front fascia looks more contemporary as Maruti Suzuki has replaced the thick chrome strip with a sleek-looking black band with chrome inserts. The double-barrel LED projector headlamps along with LED fog lamps give the new Brezza an air of premiumness. Take a closer look and you’ll notice the front LED lights merge with the new front nose To flex its SUV DNA, the Brezza sports silver skid plates in front and back. In terms of dimensions, it remains identical to the older model though the height is increased by 45mm raising it to 1,685mm. 

At a glance, the side profile looks similar to the outgoing model but it has received some character lines on the door panels. The new Brezza gets redesigned 16-inch alloy wheels and thick square-shaped all-black wheel arches.  

The rear has a clean design with new elongated LED tail lamps and the new Brezza lettering runs across the boot lid. Speaking of the boot space, it remains the same at 328 litres, though it isn’t the largest in the segment, it is accessible and wide enough to place big luggage bags as no intrusions are eating into the space.

Maruti Suzuki is offering two new optional accessory packages named Terrascape and Metroscape. The former kit costs Rs 39,999 and comes with rugged-looking bumpers, side cladding and wheel arches. The latter priced at Rs 42,990 has more urban and stylish aesthetics.

Final word

Maruti Suzuki has priced the new Brezza at Rs 7.99 lakh for the base LXi trim and goes all the way up to Rs 13.96 lakh for the top-spec ZXI+ AT variant (all prices ex-showroom, India). Compared to its rivals, the Brezza isn’t the most affordable compact SUV, but one has to keep in mind that it comes with many new and segment-first features. 

The 1.5-litre continues to be the most fuel-efficient engine in its class and being a Maruti, the Brezza will be one of the most affordable SUVs to maintain and is backed by the most well-connected network across the country. The Brezza continues to offer razor-sharp handling traits for an SUV and the ride quality has improved as it isn't as harsh as the previous model. We have no doubt  Maruti Suzuki will be laughing their way to the bank as the new Brezza will reclaim its number one position.
