After surgery, Eddie was declared cancer-free in 2002. However, in 2019, he was hospitalized after battling throat cancer for over five years. Eddie died from the illness on October 6, 2020.

      Eddie Van Halen cannot read sheet music. Eddie would watch and memorize his teacher's finger movements during piano lessons as he developed his ear until he heard the entire piano piece and replayed them, note for note. Eddie even claimed nobody suspected him that he was unable to read sheet music at all.

      Eddie Van Halen was born Edward Lodewijk van Halen on January 26, 1955, in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Their family name, van Halen is Dutch, with a lowercase v. Naming him after the famous classical composer Ludwig van Beethoven, his parents gave him the middle name Lodewijk, which is the equivalent of Ludwig in Dutch.
