Please Note: Depending on your geographical location you may notice some discrepancies in the Book in regard to dates and times and other recommendations such as Breeding Season, Racing Season and so forth. The reason being is that geography dictates what is going on in our lofts and what is immediately available to us. You see; what may be accurate to fanciers in the United States could vary greatly to fanciers in Belgium or South Africa and vice versa. What your friends are doing in other parts of the country will be different from what you need to do with your birds now. So, You Can adjust and Amend accordingly as this book is Used for Worldwide Education.
Preparing for the Breeding Season
Okay so now the racing season is behind us, we now get the chance to delve into the subject of breeding. This give us the chance to play creator (in a lesser sense off course!) and if we get this right we can lay down the building blocks to have truly great pigeons in a few months’ time.
It would be silly to concentrate on training or nutrition if you were to ignore genetics. You could have a fit healthy pigeon but if its genetics mean it has a slow heritage then it may be outperformed by an average shape pigeon with good breeding.
Now breeding may sound easy but i can tell you it is anything but. But this is where i step in, i am here to ensure that you get the best shot at breeding winners for the coming year. There are four major points we are going to cover in this section; selection, nutrition, health and upgrading.
Breeding Team Selection
Okay so now it is time to get started on your next race season, yeah you heard right. This is the first step to creating your pro race team and the hard work starts now.
We need to start selecting our first-string breeders, first we should start off by reviewing the race team’s performance. We need to decide who will stay.
Luckily if you keep records of your pigeons and their offspring you will know who has bred winners. Do you have a pair that has not bred winners in the last year or two? If not then get rid of them, on the other hand if you have two pairs that produce winners then you may consider splitting them and pairing with each other.
It is essential that you plan what steps you are going to take, you should have a clear operation in writing (or typed) that you can reference and follow. Do not just have hoards of breeders as you will just be wasting feed, you need to work out what your winners need.
Are your best breeders related? Are they crosses? Are the race winners all in the same family? Also, you need to think about the races you want to enter in the next race season.
You should then take the time to identify the top pigeons that fit your criteria and think about pairing them. Even planning a
