From Rachel Kushner, two-time finalist for both the Booker Prize and National Book Award, a “vital” (The Washington Post) and “wickedly entertaining” (The Guardian) novel about a seductive and cunning American woman who infiltrates an anarchist collective in France—a propulsive page-turner filled with dark humor.
Creation Lake is a novel about a secret agent, a thirty-four-year-old American woman of ruthless tactics and clean beauty who is sent to do dirty work in France. “Sadie Smith” is how the narrator introduces herself to the rural commune of French subversives on whom she is keeping tabs, and to her lover, Lucien, a young and well-born Parisian she has met by “cold bump”—making him believe the encounter was accidental. Like everyone she targets, Lucien is useful to her and used by her. Sadie operates by strategy and dissimulation, based on what her “contacts”—shadowy figures in business and government—instruct. First, these contacts want her to incite provocation. Then they want more.
In this region of old farms and prehistoric caves, Sadie becomes entranced by a mysterious figure named Bruno Lacombe, a mentor to the young activists who believes that the path to emancipation is not revolt but a return to the ancient past. Just as Sadie is certain she’s the seductress and puppet master of those she surveils, Bruno is seducing her with his ingenious counter-histories, his artful laments, his own tragic story.
Written in short, vaulting sections, Rachel Kushner’s rendition of “noir” is taut and dazzling. Creation Lake is Kushner’s finest achievement yet—a work of high art, high comedy, and unforgettable pleasure.
Editor's Note
Spine-tingling thriller…
Secrets, money, politics, and revenge intermingle in this spine-tingling noir thriller from the author of “The Mars Room.” Meet Sadie Smith, an undercover freelance operative who has infiltrated Le Moulin, a commune of environmental activists in rural France. With few qualms about doing whatever it takes to get the job done, Sadie is a ruthless (and delightfully unreliable) narrator who is confident she’s in control. However, as her mission unravels, it’s unclear who’s playing who in this intricately-plotted narrative of suspense and psychological intrigue.

What our readers think
Readers find this title to have a unique and creative approach, but some may find the slow pace and monologues of the narration challenging. While there is potential in the storyline, the delivery by the author as the narrator may not appeal to all readers. Looking forward to the next book from this creative author.

Hacked emails from an old guy named bruno, Just when things start Bruno sends more E mails.
The book is read by the author in a robotic, nasal schoolgirl voice with little expression. You are lulled to sleep by a monotonous voice. When you wake up the voice is still droning out Bruno’s E mails. - Rating: 1 out of 5 stars1/5

The book might be good, but the narrator ruined it. She speaks every sentence as of it’s a masterpiece. The book is mostly monologue and that can get dull without a skilled narrator. No character interested me and it became a chore to listen to it. Almost always a mistake to let the author read their own book. - Rating: 2 out of 5 stars2/5

Doesn't live up to the reviews as a spy novel. An ok narration did not help. (Even though we remain ever hopeful, very few authors seem to also be good narrators.)
Very slow moving ... mostly a lot of interior monologuing, plus more monologuing from an old guy's philosophical emails. These feel like 95 % of the book.
I've really enjoyed a couple of her other novels, and she is definitely creative in her approaches.
But there's no accounting for taste, so maybe others will find this more engaging. I definitely look forward to her next book.1 person found this helpful
