About this audiobook
#1 New York Times Bestseller and #1 International Bestseller • Now a Peacock Original Series starring Harvey Keitel and Melanie Lynskey
This beautiful, illuminating tale of hope and courage is based on interviews that were conducted with Holocaust survivor and Auschwitz-Birkenau tattooist Ludwig (Lale) Sokolov—an unforgettable love story in the midst of atrocity.
“The Tattooist of Auschwitz is an extraordinary document, a story about the extremes of human behavior existing side by side: calculated brutality alongside impulsive and selfless acts of love. I find it hard to imagine anyone who would not be drawn in, confronted and moved. I would recommend it unreservedly to anyone, whether they’d read a hundred Holocaust stories or none.”—Graeme Simsion, internationally-bestselling author of The Rosie Project
In April 1942, Lale Sokolov, a Slovakian Jew, is forcibly transported to the concentration camps at Auschwitz-Birkenau. When his captors discover that he speaks several languages, he is put to work as a Tätowierer (the German word for tattooist), tasked with permanently marking his fellow prisoners.
Imprisoned for over two and a half years, Lale witnesses horrific atrocities and barbarism—but also incredible acts of bravery and compassion. Risking his own life, he uses his privileged position to exchange jewels and money from murdered Jews for food to keep his fellow prisoners alive.
One day in July 1942, Lale, prisoner 32407, comforts a trembling young woman waiting in line to have the number 34902 tattooed onto her arm. Her name is Gita, and in that first encounter, Lale vows to somehow survive the camp and marry her.
A vivid, harrowing, and ultimately hopeful re-creation of Lale Sokolov's experiences as the man who tattooed the arms of thousands of prisoners with what would become one of the most potent symbols of the Holocaust, The Tattooist of Auschwitz is also a testament to the endurance of love and humanity under the darkest possible conditions.
Editor's Note
Audie Award winner…

AudioFile praises the “superb narrator” for capturing “every emotion from fear to trepidation to hope and even to love with understated warmth.”
Heather Morris
Heather Morris is a native of New Zealand, now resident in Australia. For several years, while working in a large public hospital in Melbourne, she studied and wrote screenplays, one of which was optioned by an Academy Award-winning screenwriter in the US. In 2003, Heather was introduced to an elderly gentleman who “might just have a story worth telling.” The day she met Lale Sokolov changed both their lives. Their friendship grew and Lale embarked on a journey of self-scrutiny, entrusting the innermost details of his life during the Holocaust to her. Heather originally wrote Lale’s story as a screenplay—which ranked high in international competitions—before reshaping it into her debut novel, The Tattooist of Auschwitz.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This was a novelized form of the true tale of Lale Sokolov, a Slovakian Jew who is transported to Auschwitz-Birkenau. While there it is discovered that he speaks 5 languages so he is made to the be the camp's tattooist. While there is meets a trembling young woman waiting to be tattooed, Gita, prisoner 34902. Using his "privileged" position Lale steals jewels and trades them for food morsels which he doles out to others. This is a story of hope and humanity even in the darkest hour. One of the best Holocaust books I have read. 288 pages

- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5It's long time since I read a book cover to cover in one day, but I just couldn't put this down.
However, given this was based on a true story, I have to ask; where was the depth, where was the horror of the situation portrayed, where were the characteristics of the characters that are so crucial to a story of this nature.
The reason my rating is only 3 stars, is that I not only felt the last few chapters were rushed, as if the Author really wasn't sure where to go with this, but the whole book was a missed opportunity to keep the memories of those involved alive. I'm hoping the nest in the trilogy will be more developed. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5this made me sob uncontrollably one of the best books about forgotten history
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5perfect in every sense, amazing writing, chiling, exciting, all the emotions in one book, one of the best ones I´ve read this year.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Interesting book and a quick read. I had a hard time figuring out if this story was true or fiction. I was hoping it was a true story because that would make it more powerful but then I saw it was listed as fiction.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Heart rendering, tear jerking brilliant read.
Made all the more hard hitting knowing it is a true story, and amongst all the hell these poor people endured love still shown through.
Even if war books are not your normal reading material I do honestly think you should give this book a read and you will not be disappointed that you took a chance on it.
Just have some tissues to hand as you will undoubtedly need them! - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Great Historical Fiction based on accounts of a survivor of the Auschwitz Death Camp. A beautiful story, well written of the life of Lale Eisenberg (Sokolov) and his eventual wife, Gita. I read it with my 13 year old daughter and we both loved the book which was hard to put down.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Truly heart wrenching. The writing and the The chosen narrator were Perfect.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5Books on the holocaust tend to get a free pass and any criticism is met with shock and outrage so I will begin by saying that this was an engrossing and well written account of one couple’s experience. If I were a holocaust survivor or had immediate family members who were affected by these atrocities, I might be offended or upset by the tone of the story or how relatively normal Lale’s day to day life seems to be. To be specific, he seems to come and go as he pleases and appears to be relatively unfazed by the disappearance of his friend Leon. I don’t want to spoil the story since it is interesting and a good read.
