Prep report: Barnum bombs Hilltoppers from deep

Senior Brooks Johnson scored 36 points, but it wasn't enough to keep pace with the hot-shooting Bombers.

BARNUM — Barnum drained a dozen 3-pointers, including five from Blake Axtell, in a 78-72 boys basketball win over Duluth Marshall Monday.

Axtell led the Bombers with 20 points, but he was joined in double figures by four other players. Julian Beckstrand finished with 17 points, Brock Hurst had 15, Patrick Poirier had 14 and Bryce Ferguson had 10.

Hilltoppers senior and Minnesota Duluth recruit Brooks Johnson scored 36, but the Bombers’ balance was too much. Aaden Westerbur and Josh Johnson added 10 points apiece for Marshall.

Mountain Iron-Buhl 74, Greenway 51

The Rangers' T.J. DuChamp scored 17 points and hit four 3-pointers to lead his team to a big win over Greenway.

DuChamp was joined in double figures by Micaden Clines with 15 points, Izaiah Alto with 14 and Chris King with 10.

Gage Olson and Stephen McGee each had 17 for Greenway, but no other Raider scored more than three points.

Moose Lake/Willow River 73, McGregor 62

Eli Youngs scored 27 points to lead the Rebels to the 11-point win at McGregor Monday.

Layne Radzak added 15 points for MLWR and Chase Clausen finished with 9 points.

Hurley 47, Solon Springs 41

Solon Springs’ Isaiah Ahlberg scored 15 points and Cade Lisson had 10, but it wasn’t enough to top Hurley in a matchup of two of the four teams tied for first place in the Northern Lights Conference.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Esko 72, South Ridge 32

Celia Preiner led all scorers with 17 points in the blowout win over South Ridge on Monday.

Clara Swanson added 15 points for Esko and Layla Peterson finished with 11.

Madelyn Morse led South Ridge with 13 points.

BOYS HOCKEY

Moose Lake Area 4, North Shore 2

Chase Klavu’s shorthanded goal sparked a three-score second period in the Rebels' win over North Shore Monday.

Joe Olson scored twice later in the second and Brayden Strand added another in the third for Moose Lake Area.

Kade Norman put the Storm in front early in the first period, but North Shore wouldn’t score again until midway through the third period when Ayden Althaus struck on a power play.

Eli Gilbertson made 31 saves for the Rebels and Dax Krech made 36 for North Shore.

Barnum boys basketball defeated Marshall 78-72 and Mountain Iron-Buhl topped Greenway 74-51.
Cloquet-Esko-Carlton defeated Northern Tier 2-0 in the nightcap of Hockey Day in Cloquet on Saturday night.
