The parents of a one-month-old baby boy who was found in a car seat in the median of Pecos Street in Adams County on Christmas morning, clad in just a diaper, have been arrested.
The Adams County Sheriff’s Office arrested Jarvis Sims, 42, and Christina Thurman, 33, on Wednesday on suspicion of felony child abuse. They were described as being the biological parents of the baby boy, who was found in the 7400 block of Pecos Street Wednesday morning.
No further information about why the baby was left in the median was immediately available.
The sheriff’s office posted a picture of the car seat on social media Wednesday and asked for the community’s help identifying who it might belong to.
“Thank you to everyone who helped spread the word for this case,” the agency posted Wednesday afternoon.
Denver’s KMGH-7 reported that the boy had been taken to Children’s Hospital Colorado as a precaution. Nikki Kimbleton, a spokeswoman for Adams County, confirmed Thursday afternoon that the child was “in our care and is safe.”
“Anytime a child’s safety meets state and federal safety criteria, a county will ensure safety by finding the most appropriate and safe setting for care,” she told The Denver Post.
AnneMarie Harper, a spokeswoman for the Colorado Department of Human Services, said people can help prevent child abuse and neglect by calling the Colorado Child Abuse and Neglect Hotline at 844-264-5437 or 844-CO-4-kids.
“If child abuse and neglect have not occurred, a call to the hotline could help professionals connect services and programs with a struggling family in need of support,” she said.
