Richard Hammond and his wife Mindy have split.

The Top Gear presenter has announced that he and Mindy, who have been together for 28 years and married for 22, have decided to go their separate ways. In a statement from Richard, which he posted to X/Twitter, the car fanatic confirmed that their marriage "is coming to an end".

Hammond wrote: "A little update from us; this Christmas we were together as a family and this year we will still be a family but just structured a bit differently."

"Our marriage is coming to end, but we’ve had an amazing 28 years together and two incredible daughters. We will always be in each other’s lives and are proud of the family we created."

"We won’t be commenting further and sincerely hope that our privacy and that of our children will be respected at this time. With Love, Richard and Mindy."

Fans rushed to support the Top Gear star and replied to his tweet with kind messages for Richard and Mindy. One person wrote: "Its no one's business but your own, as much as some would love it to be otherwise. Enjoy life."

Others wished the pair "peace and happiness," while some were upset by the "very sad" news. "Sorry to hear. Hope you get your privacy," tweeted one fan, as another person wished the Hammonds "best of luck".

Richard and Mindy married back in 2002 and have been together for almost three decades. In the presenter's book On The Edge: My Story, Richard explained that the pair were "instantly" attracted to one another: "In an instant, I fell in love with her and realised I had met my soul-mate and best friend for life."

Mindy was by Richard's side during his horror car crash back in 2006. The Top Gear presenter's car flipped over while he was filming for the show, which left him in a coma for two weeks.

She spoke to The Telegraph about the situation and explained that Richard couldn't remember who she was: "It was disconcerting when, early after the crash, Richard looked at me from his hospital bed and said, 'You're lovely, but you're not my wife'."

"When I corrected him, he responded, 'No, you're not my wife, my wife is French!' Indeed, when he was allowed home five weeks later, it became clear that Richard's memory loss was no short-term affliction."

Richard recovered from the crash but the presenter's short term memory is still affected.
