Treatment Courts
Maine treatment courts provide intensive, community-based, court-supervised treatment and strict accountability for eligible individuals with serious substance use and/or mental health disorders who are involved with the criminal justice or child protection system.
Goals of treatment courts
- Help make communities safer by reducing criminal behavior and recidivism
- Address the underlying causes of criminal behavior by individuals with serious substance use disorders and/or mental health disorders
- Educate those involved in the criminal justice and child protection system and the public about substance use and mental health issues
- Increase participants’ personal, family, and community accountability
- Develop and strengthen healthy and safe parent-child relationships
- Use limited judicial system resources efficiently and effectively
