When she wasn't working on music, Selena also explored her passion for business. She [took college courses](https://www.caller.com/story/entertainment/people/selena/2015/04/18/tejano-star-selena-also-was-education-advocate/91946470/) in pursuit of a business degree and [was running](https://www.texasmonthly.com/arts-entertainment/the-queen-is-dead/) two of her own clothing boutique/salon locations in her home state of Texas by 1994.

In addition to being a gifted musician, Selena was an accomplished businessperson.

In a 2020 [People](https://youtu.be/WBlQF59jUjU?t=273) interview, Selena's family said that when fans would compliment the singer's earrings, she would remove them and offer them as a present. Selena also once did this with a new pair of shoes.  
  
"This girl admired the boots that Selena was wearing, and she had just gotten those," Marcella, Selena's mom, said. "She took them off and she gave them to her ... That's how kind-hearted she was."

Selena would offer fans her clothing items as gifts.

In 1994, Selena was chosen as the Best Mexican-American Album Grammy recipient for _Selena Live!_. This made her the [first female Tejano artist](https://www.grammy.com/news/remember-when-selena-wins-big-36th-grammys) to ever win this award.

Selena made history when she won her Grammy Award.

Selena took time out of her schedule to [visit middle schoolers](https://youtu.be/kRhbKhD4gPI) in the fall of 1994. This appearance was part of a stay-in-school program she was involved in called Selena Agrees.  
  
"I feel that, if you have a dream, don't let anybody take it away, and you always believe that the impossible is always possible," Selena said as she met with students.

Selena was an advocate for kids staying in school.
