One of Boston’s biggest holiday celebrations is fast approaching — the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
Typically drawing upwards of one million people to South Boston, the parade celebrates the rich history of the Irish culture and communities that have been present in Boston for centuries. This year’s parade will return to Southie on the actual holiday this year — Sunday, March 17.
The celebration is also known as the Evacuation Day Parade, which commemorates the day that British forces withdrew from Boston early in the Revolutionary War.
Boston is also where the first North American St. Patty’s Day celebrations took place, when in 1737, Boston’s Irish community joined the city’s new Irish immigrants to celebrate the memory of St. Patrick, Ireland’s patron saint. In 1901, the parade moved to South Boston and began to commemorate both Evacuation Day and St. Patrick’s Day.
In the days and weeks before the parade, you might want to order a pint at one of Greater Boston’s plethora of Irish pubs to commence the celebrations. But which ones are the best in the area? Reader Emily S. of Sharon said in 2022 that Corrib Pub in West Roxbury was “the most authentic Irish bar” she’d visited. “Most of the clientele are from Ireland and all the food is like back home,” she said. Or do you prefer the The Dubliner in Downtown Boston, which hosts events like an upcoming special Irish dinner with a Michelin-starred guest chef?
Before the festivities officially kick off, tell us where you go for your corned beef hash and pint of Guinness, and we’ll update our guide to the best Irish pubs in Greater Boston.
