This year with rising feed prices and the push to move away from commercial feeds we decided to research fodder systems. We started looking at the all-inclusive trailers but the cost was too high for us. When we had the chance to check one out we knew we could take the same idea and make it work for what we had on the ranch.
We needed an area that would somewhat temperature and humidity controlled. We were able to use our basement with a little modification. Since it wasn't finished we added plastic around the walls to keep the moisture in and protect the wood. Since we have hot summers and cold winters we are going to be adding a heater and an a/c unit.
We purchase the barley seed for a local seed grower. You need to make sure that it is seed quality not feed quality. We soak the seed for 24 hours in a bucket of water. Then we put about 1.5 to 2lbs of seed in trays with holes on the end so the water drains out evenly. In 7 days we have a 10+lb tray of barley fodder.
Seed to feed in 7 days:
Our goats, chickens, pigs, ducks and geese go nuts over this feed!
If you have any questions please feel free to ask!!!
