Non-invasive Skin Tightening Treatments

What are non-invasive skin tightening treatments?

Non-invasive skin tightening procedures are non-surgical devices used to stimulate collagen production in the deeper layers of the skin. Overtime, these devices work to shrink tissue, which has lost its tone and elasticity. There are many types of non-invasive skin tightening devices produced by a large number of companies, but the majority use laser energy, radiofrequency energy, ultrasound energy, or a combination of these energies to deliver heat to the skin tissue.

These devices can be used on multiple areas of the body, such as the face, neck, abdomen, buttock, arms, and thighs. The number of treatments needed varies from device, energy source, location, and individual patient needs.

What to expect after the procedure

Patients may experience mild swelling, bruising, and/or redness after their procedure. If they occur, then swelling or bruising can up to last 1-2 weeks. Redness typically resolves within a few hours. Many patients will feel like resuming their normal activities later that day or the next day.

Results from skin tightening procedures which work on collagen stimulation can often take at least 3-6 months to see their effect. The number of treatments required will vary based on device used, area treated, energy source and level, condition being treated, age of patient, and individual patient characteristics.

What to expect before the procedure

Before the procedure, your ASDS physician will review your medical history and perform a physical examination. This is the time for the doctor and patient to discuss expectations, potential risks and outcomes of the procedure.

In addition, the patient should:

  • Be in healthy condition
  • Have realistic expectations
  • Tell the doctor about any prescription and over-the-counter medication, as well as supplements that they are currently taking
  • Avoid blood-thinning drugs should be taken for at least two weeks prior

Is non-invasive skin tightening painful?

The treatments are well tolerated by most patients and vary with the device and energy source being used. Some machines may necessitate topical anesthesia and/or other means of pain control. Please speak with your ASDS physician for further details.
