Skyy Moore is frustrating. He has been, by any reasonable measure, a failure. Most of the time, particularly on a team as good as the Chiefs, this type of failure wouldn't dominate the headlines, but Skyy Moore moves to the forefront for a two very specific reasons.
The WR room problems
Skyy Moore happens to play WR for a team that has had a number of notable issues in the WR room the last couple of years. Last year it was drops, this year it is injuries. And in neither case has Skyy Moore helped provide an answer for KC. That's a problem when the team invested a second round pick in you.
Moore came in as a high floor player, but we have discovered that his floor was not nearly high enough. He was passed by Rashee Rice basically immediately, and has never been more than WR4 or so regardless of circumstances. That's okay if you are an undrafted FA or a late round pick, but not if you are a 2nd rounder. You should be part of the solution rather than part of the problem.
Moore is part of the problem.
Chiefs Draft Success
The success around Moore by his fellow draftees has also been a problem for Moore. Let's look at the draft classes from the year before Moore was drafted (2021), his year (2022) and the year after (2023)
2021
2 - Nick Bolton and Creed Humphrey: Two starters from day one, high level contributors immediately.
4 - Josh Kaindoh: Never made an impression on the defensive line. Played 3 games. Out of the league now.
5 - Noah Gray and Cornell Powell: Powell has been up and down on the practice squad. Has never made an impact. Gray has been TE2 more or less since his second year. Gray is a good player, though not an all time great like the guy he backs up.
6 - Trey Smith: Another day one starter, high level contributor. You don't expect to get that out of a sixth rounder. That's a home run pick as a second or third rounder. A+++ as a late round pick.
2022
1 - Trent McDuffie and George Karlaftis: Two more starters and high level contributors from almost the very beginning. McDuffie is an all pro. If DE wasn't stacked, Karlaftis might be able to say the same. He's still an above average DE in the league.
2 - Bryan Cook and Moore: Cook played well enough to let KC move on from Tyrann Mathieu and has shown himself to be a starting caliber safety. Moore is Moore.
3 - Leo Chenal: Elevated from backup after the first two years to a starter this year. The progression you want from a mid round guy.
4 - Joshua Williams: Has been a good backup, but probably won't ever be a starter. That's as much due to the others in his draft class, but he is still a contributor.
5 - Darian Kinnard: Solid enough backup with the Chiefs, now with Philadelphia
7 - Nazeeh Johnson, Jaylen Watson, Isaiah Pacheco: This group is as good as you can do in the 7th round. Starting RB, Starting CB, backup CB on a top 10 defense in the league. All have contributed when healthy. Johnson would be considered a success as a 7th rounder. The other two are even better.
2023
1 - Felix Anudike-Uzomah: Backup, but has flashed this year after showing little as a first year player.
2 - Rashee Rice: Flashed as a WR1 before the injury this year.
3 - Wanya Morris: Part time starter as a LT. Has not been great, but probably will be a long time swing tackle in the league.
4 - Chamarri Conner: Another great DB drafted by Veach. May end up allowing the Chiefs to say goodbye to Justin Reid.
5 - BJ Thompson: Career is up in the air after cadiac arrest earlier this year, but he did contribute some on special teams.
6 - Keondre Coburn: Played for KC briefly before moving on to Tennessee.
7 - Nic Jones: Another solid DB, though the success of the other late round DBs has led to Jones being relegated to the practice squad.
By my count, Kaindoh is the only one that is out of the league entirely. Coburn and Kinnard are no longer with KC, but still in the NFL. Of the 23 players drafted in those three drafts, 11 began this season as starters for the Chiefs.
That success means Moore stands out as an outlier of the high draft picks, making his failure stand out even more.
Will Moore ever figure it out? Maybe, but probably not in KC. His best chance is to catch on somewhere else where his draft status and previous baggage won't weigh him down.
