From mid-October to Mid-June, the road to this trailhead is closed. Visitors may park at the Gateway Trailhead at the closed gate. However, this will add 5 miles round-trip to the hike. Parking at the Gateway Trailhead does not have a fee as you are starting outside of the park.
Between November 15 and April 30, dogs are only allowed on the Brainard Lake and Lefthand Park Reservoir Roads, and Sourdough Trail (#835), as per the Forest Service.

We did this in August 2024. Got really close (maybe too close)to a bull moose. Saw 3 moose on the hike. Can swim in the lake and it was very refreshing. The trail to the upper lake is hard to follow and crosses the creek several times. You can make it there via the boulder field but the trail is way easier
