Southern Tomato Sandwich

Tastes like summer! Room temperature tomatoes are key here and once the salt and pepper hit them, the juices start flowing. When the juicy tomatoes blend in with the mayonnaise, it makes a delicious, creamy, slightly tangy, and flavorful sauce. The bread becomes slightly soggy, in the best way possible. The last bite is even better than the first!

Culinary producer Nicole McLaughlin (a.k.a. NicoleMcMom), a born and bred Alabamian, has spent a lifetime mastering the art of the Southern tomato sandwich. This Southern staple may be simple, but it's far from boring.

Southern Tomato Sandwich Ingredients

Making a perfect tomato sandwich requires only a few budget-friendly ingredients:

· Mayonnaise: Nicole prefers Duke's mayonnaise for tomato sandwiches, but any mayo will do. Make sure to spread it in an even layer on both bread slices.
· Bread: Now isn't the time to get fancy. Plain ol' white bread is key.
· Tomato: Cut a ripe tomato into even slices.
· Salt and pepper: Once again, simplicity is your friend when it comes to a Southern tomato sandwich. Salt and pepper are all you need.

Best Tomatoes for a Tomato Sandwich

The best tomatoes are found on the side of the road at the farmstand, according to Nicole. It doesn't really matter what variety you use — just as long as it's fresh, meaty, juicy, and in-season. Beefsteak tomatoes are always a good choice. If you'd like to use an heirloom variety, you can't go wrong with a Cherokee Purple.

How to Make a Southern Tomato Sandwich

You'll find the full, step-by-step recipe below — but here's a brief preview of what you can expect when you make a classic Southern tomato sandwich:

1. Slice: You want even slices that aren't too thick or too thin. Use your best judgment.
2. Spread: Use a butter knife to spread mayonnaise onto both slices of bread. You probably won't need more than a tablespoon.
3. Assemble: Sandwich the tomatoes (in two layers) between the slices of bread. Make sure to liberally season the tomatoes between each layer for maximum flavor.

What to Serve With Southern Tomato Sandwiches

Southern tomato sandwiches are traditionally paired with potato chips and an ice cold glass of sweet tea or Coca-Cola. Of course, if you'd like to up the ante a bit, you could try serving it with one of our favorite Southern side dishes. For instance:

· Sweet Restaurant Slaw
· Roasted Vidalia Onions
