I got this baked French toast recipe from my sister in law. She and my brother had it at their gift opening after the wedding. I make it any time we have people staying with us, and it is always a hit. You may sprinkle the top with pecans if you wish.

  • French bread: This recipe starts a loaf of French bread, cut into diagonal pieces.
  • Eggs: The base of the French toast custard is eight large eggs.
  • Milk and half-and-half: You’ll need milk and half-and-half to complete the custard.

How to Make Baked French Toast

You’ll find the full, step-by-step recipe below — but here’s a brief overview of what you can expect when you make baked French toast at home:

  1. Arrange the bread slices in a buttered baking dish.
  2. Beat the eggs, milk, cream, vanilla, and cinnamon together and pour over the bread.
  3. Refrigerate overnight.
  4. Combine the remaining ingredients in a saucepan and heat until bubbling.
  5. Pour the brown sugar mixture over the bread.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven.

Can You Make Baked French Toast Ahead of Time?

Yes! In fact, since the bread has to soak in the egg mixture overnight, this recipe is a great make-ahead dish by its very nature. About an hour before you’re ready to serve, just pop the soaked bread out of the refrigerator, make the brown sugar mixture on the stove, pour it over the bread, and bake!

How to Store Baked French Toast

Store your leftover baked French toast in an airtight container (such as a zip-top bag or a reusable storage container) in the refrigerator for up to three days.

Allrecipes Community Tips and Praise

“I used a loaf of brioche and kept everything else the same,” says one Allrecipes community member. “Knocked it out of the park! Baking the dish on top of a foil-covered pan is a good tip because it might bubble over.”

“I love this recipe,” raves juliefreese. “I've been making it for about 10 years. It's a tradition in my house to have it every Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter.”

“I have made this for Christmas breakfast for years,” says knkkl458. “I always use a French baguette and make sure it is a day old. It turns out perfect every time. Great recipe!”
